U.N.S. Lyrics

(Maman Afirika)

Min dé lè tin bo dji djan yin
Bomin dé lè fon do nou wa wè

Oh, mama Afirika

Ashè é Mama, ashè é Mama Africa
Ashè é Mama, ashè é Mama Africa

Ashè é Mama, ashè é Mama Africa (Maman Afirika)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of U.N.S.’s song “Africa” speak of the singer’s love for Africa, the continent she identifies as her true home. The verses describe the beauty of this land, where there are no borders to limit people and their hearts, and where one can dance barefoot gazing towards the sea without any care in the world. The chorus repeats the phrase “Ashè é Mama, Ashè é Mama Africa,” which translates into “Thank you, Africa Mama,” expressing the gratitude the artist feels towards this land that is home to so much diversity and joy.

Furthermore, the lyrics allude to the idea that Africa is a place of truth and brightness, where laughter dispels the clouds and connects human beings to God, who made them in his image. The mention of colors and the sun and Earth coming to celebrate evoke the idea of Africa as a vibrant, lively and nurturing place. Mama Africa is a term of endearment that refers to the motherly role Africa plays, providing comfort and sustenance to its people.

In conclusion, U.N.S.’s song “Africa” is a celebration of the beauty, diversity and joy that Africa embodies, as well as an expression of the singer’s love and gratitude for this land where her heart truly belongs.

As a child growing up in California, USA where earthquakes are common and so many think it will break off and fall into the ocean, this is not at all surprising to me. In fact, I think this is awesome to see, even if I never see it expand any further. To be able to see how the land masses were shaped over millions of years within our lifetime is truly a gift from God.

When our professor taught us decades ago of the African Rift Valley with so much passion, I did not expect in my lifetime to see any significant advancement toward the manifestation of the predicted ocean. This should be humbling to every member of humanity. (should be, but....)
