As a child growing up in California, USA where earthquakes are common and so many think it will break off and fall into the ocean, this is not at all surprising to me. In fact, I think this is awesome to see, even if I never see it expand any further. To be able to see how the land masses were shaped over millions of years within our lifetime is truly a gift from God.

I can appreciate the knowledge and the effort that went into the many facets that come to fruition in this video. However, given the current global climate of events, tensions, and economic problems. Wouldn't it have been great if it happened in the northeast African desert .many engineers have long dreamt of figuring out how to bring an ocean into that interior hoping to provide evaporation to that part of the desert. Maybe one day they may be able to make such a thing happen. It would help, I know just a little bit, but with ocean levels climbing, may still help by displacing water from the ocean. I retired to a semi remote South Philippines beach 8 Years ago. For hundreds of years of local recorded history the shore line of the Philippines Trench has been sinking into the Pacific. Centuries ago a Spanish Priest recorded an entire town of permanent, stores, population and dwellings broke away in an instant sinking 50 meters into sea. Men returning home from work on mountains found only ocean, no homes, no survivors. During rough seas for Forty years after the Catholic Church bell could be heard ringing by fishermen deep below them.

My home is two meters above high tide. One time water came a foot deep in bedroom our mattress floating. I then went scuba diving off our beach, very steep rock face 70 degrees slope. To my surprise I swam into a lime stone Cavern FORMED IN AIR over centuries. Enterance is 29 meters under todays high tide mark! There are also holes in the surface limestone that woman collecting seashells, sea Cucumbers for dinner fall into sucked down to frightening death by the retreating tide like a flushing toilet.

On the time scales involved a century is extremely new and recent. We are talking about a proces wich works over tens to hundreds of millions of years.

Actually this process has roughly been at the same stage as it is now when humans first left Africa. And it's still very recent.

Yeah but recently two new volcanic islands in The Red Sea, because the cracking here talking about. Then add the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. I have a small map on a book cover, where it's scary clear, because too much linear from north south seen about it, but as said it'll be a long time before it happens. Isn't this why it is called "the great rift valley"? I have seen it, vacationed there, and you can see that this might have been a process which stated many years ago and will likely to continue years hence. Do we assume that if there is no adequate base, that it will sink into the sea? At least if it happens too quickly and that portion not adequately based. How does it happen?

What made the land split was from a moon of a planet that hit the Earth. The rock that is missing is the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The collision moved Earth from its spot between Mars and Jupiter to where it sits now between Venus and Mars. Lake Turkana is in the Rift Valley, and there is geological evidence that its level was once considerably higher than it is now. It shrunk quite a lot in relatively recent years. The Norwegians built a fish processing plant n the west shore that a few years later was too far away from the lake to be used.

when teaching us about the Rock of Gibraltar which once kept the Atlantic Ocean out of what eventually became the Mediterranean Sea, our professor waxed downright poetic about the centuries it took to fill that desert basin when the Rock finally split, and the thundering cataract that must have resulted to join the new body of water to the great ocean. I live in the rift valley in Kenya, in more than 20 years we haven't had an earthquake that is worth mentioning, only earth tremors that is barely noticeable. The biggest danger are volcanic eruptions along the rift, with eruptions such as in the Virunga mountains (Goma, Congo) or Ol Donyo Lengai (Kenya) posing a threat

There was an ocean there 5 thousand years ago. It's bathtub plug if it had one would be south of the Congo. It dried up once before. Could happen every 5 thousand years but I doubt that ... But in Africa floods come seasonally like La Nina does in the Pacific ocean... But I know damming the Nile river for hydroelectric power that benefits only countries that are not in Africa isn't helping the water table remain full, groundwater and wells rely on it. It's been a disaster hence why it was never powered up until recently. That damn dam! Is killing millions potentially every year!

Those splits are so cool! Engineers need to invent a telescoping bridge so they can just expand the bridge as needed rather than filling it constantly.

What's terrifying about this? It would seem more terrifying (especially to those in Miami Fl) that the N. American plate is being subducted along the S. Eastern edge by the Caribbean plate and that is why buildings have crumbled and "the dreaded sea level rise" is happening along the Atlantic edge of Florida..

Buildings are crumbling in Florida Bc they have not been invested in or repaired in over 100 years! Literal high priced junk with pretty pain and accessories thrown over top as the local gov pockets funds used for infrastructure.

Dont discount what I said about the geologic subduction.. IT IS HAPPENING.
Do you not understand how it bends and fractures the subducted land? What do you think causes earthquakes? It is not the only thing but it IS ONE OF THEM and in this case it is .

It has to be cracking along a former plate boundary: rift system means this area is breaking up, i.e. “rift”. Duh! This is typical over geologic time and possible on all continents also along old and new fault lines.

Maybe. One geologist measured the tectonic plates' speed for an ancient slip movement at 10m/minute. So we all hope it takes 1m years but there are no guarantees.
This will spell disaster for the Nile headwaters.

Most of the animations you have used to show continental shifts show Indian plate already attached to Eurasian plate which is incorrect. Indian plate separates from Africa and joins the Eurasian plate which also created the Himalayas.
