After signing with Epic Records, they released debut album No Pleasantries, produced by Rick Parashar, in 2000. The albums lead singles, "Godless" and "Feel Alive", charted at numbers 5 and 25 respectively on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts. After touring extensively with the likes of Linkin Park, Slipknot, Nickelback, Godsmack and 3 Doors Down, the group went on hiatus in 2002. During that time, Albro, along with other singers, auditioned to become the singer for Velvet Revolver.
In 2004, the group returned, releasing The Heavy, produced by Rick Parashar, on Nitrus Records. Lineup changes followed with both Shirley and Holt departed the group, replaced by bassist Zoltan Bathory and drummer Philippe Mathys while Logan (Deadly Motor Vehicles) was added as the group's second guitarist. During a show, guitarist Weber suffered a seizure and was later diagnosed with a meningioma brain tumor. The group briefly performed without Weber before eventually going on another hiatus.
In 2005, Bathory left the group to form the successful metal group Five Finger Death Punch while Mathys is currently the drummer for Hydrovibe.

A little look inside you
All you've known has gone up and down
And break, I'm just a little bit angry
Just a little bit angry
All I've got is this shell, I've found
I know, How long
All I've got is dead
You're not effective Is all I'm fed
All I've got is dead
So for the time I'll live in my head
Look, Look at those who have told you
Those who have sold you
Pretend they're on higher ground
Burn, I say, Burn those that scold you
It was those before you
Who created this hell I've found
I know, How long
Until you all fall down
All I've got is dead
You're not effective is all I'm fed
All I've got is dead
So for the time I'll live in my head
From the time you get up, until the time you lay cold
Till the time you wake up in your life
You're already old
Does a life that breathes, Take time to heal your head
It doesn't matter 'cause you're already dead
The lyrics of U.P.O.'s song Dead are loaded with emotion and meaning. The song's chorus repeats the line, "All I've got is dead," hinting at a sense of nihilism and hopelessness. The first stanza implores the listener to take a closer look at themselves and their surroundings, suggesting that everything in their life has been chaotic and tumultuous, leading to a sense of frustration and anger. The singer seems to be struggling with something, perhaps the realization that their life has been empty and meaningless or that those around them have let them down.
The second stanza is particularly poignant, as it calls out those who have sold or scolded the listener. The singer seems to be suggesting that these individuals have contributed to the chaos and fallenness the listener is experiencing. The line, "Burn, I say, Burn those that scold you," is particularly striking, as it suggests that the only way to rid oneself of the negativity and chaos is to eliminate those who cause it. The chorus repeats, "All I've got is dead," driving home the sense of hopelessness and despair.
The final stanza seems to suggest that no matter how long we live, we are all already dead. The line, "From the time you get up, until the time you lay cold," suggests that life is fleeting and we are all simply waiting for our eventual demise. The song's title, "Dead," takes on new meaning in the final stanza, as it suggests that we are all dead inside and just waiting for our physical bodies to catch up.
