Shame
U Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Won't show the pain I'm in
My shame
Has chased me too far
I feel safe
Stuck in the ground
Shutting down
On the outside
Keeping my guard up
When no one's around
No one can get close
The lyrics of U.P.O.'s song Shame explore the feelings of guilt and self-doubt that lead to a life of shame. The first verse describes a sense of hopelessness and despair that result from a one-way ticket to a cold and ill place, which represents the singer's internal state of mind. The second verse delves deeper into the singer's failed aspirations. They lament that they could have been a doctor or a Harvard priest, but instead wound up as a "freak" like themselves. This comparison to "freak" indicates a feeling of self-loathe that drives their shame.
The chorus of the song repeatedly emphasizes the theme of shame with the lyrics, "Shame, Nothing you can do to hide / Shame, Just a little pain inside / Shame, You throw your life away / If I'm drowning, so are you." These lyrics convey how shame is all-consuming, and it affects not only the person experiencing it but everyone around them. The subsequent verses further highlight how shame manifests itself in secretive and destructive behavior, represented by the phrase "a true romance, a deadly dance." The bridge of the song is a countdown, "tick tock," which is a metaphor for the inevitability of life's passage and its pressure. The final line, "No jesus loves you," indicates that the singer sees God as a source of judgment and condemnation, further fueling the spiral of shame.
