Stand By Me
U2 & bruce Springsteen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No, I won't be afraid, no, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
So darling, darling, stand by me
Oh, stand by me, oh, stand
Stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall
Or the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
The lyrics to U2 and Bruce Springsteen's "Stand By Me" reflect themes of trust, support, and constancy throughout trying times. In the opening lines, "When the night has come and the land is dark, and the moon is the only light we'll see," the setting suggests a moment of darkness or uncertainty. However, the message behind the lyrics is one of unwavering trust and faith in a companion that is always present: "no, I won't be afraid, no, I won't be afraid, just as long as you stand, stand by me." The plea for support is delivered softly, almost gently, as the lyrics move into the chorus, where the phrase "darling, darling, stand by me" is repeated throughout. The repetition only emphasizes the unwavering support the singer seeks in difficult moments.
The lyrics continue to reaffirm the need for constancy, no matter how dire the situation may appear. In the second verse, where the lyrics describe the possibility of the sky tumbling down or mountains crumbling to the sea, the singer makes it clear that they won't falter or shed a tear in the face of such destruction, as long as one has support from the person they're singing to: "I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear, just as long as you stand, stand by me." The overall message of the song is one of immense trust and the need to find someone to support us in moments of darkness.

U2 and Springsteen both have tremendous respect for each other. Bono inducted Bruce into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and Springsteen inducted U2 in 2005. They are both great songwriters.

The boss is the epitome of American Freedom. He is a true artist singing about his experience sharing his life and times. You can choose to like him or not, as an American we have that privilege. I love this true American artist and hope he has the strength to entertain for years to come

Wow -- didn't know footage existed of this. I was there and remember it well. Little Steven opened for U2 that night, and we had a suspicion that Bruce might be lurking around. A few songs before Bruce came out they had a guy come out of the crowd and play Bono's acoustic guitar for one of their songs (since Bono was unable) -- one of my buddies ( a Bruce fanatic) thought Bono's request for Bruce was done mockingly...until Bruce walked out and started playing. My got emotional...
