In 1973 the band recruited an 18 year old Michael Schenker from the band Scorpions. This marked a departure from their space rock sound to a more hard edged rock sound. They released a string of critically acclaimed rock albums in the 70s that gained them a following in America and made them stars in the UK. Around the time of the 1978 release of Obsession, tensions between Schenker and Mogg were mounting. UFO arguably reached their peak at this time. In 1978 they toured extensively and recorded material for the double live album Strangers in the Night which was released in 1979. This album is considered by many fans and critics to be one of the best live rock albums ever produced. Immediately after the Strangers in the Night tour Michael Schenker left the band.
After this period UFO's popularity began to decline as they continue to release material. In 1988 they disbanded due to lackluster sales, decline in popularity, and their inability to (or perhaps refusal to) capitalize on the popularity of the glam rock movement. But the hiatus was short lived.
In 1992 Mogg and Way put together another UFO lineup that met with some new interest from fans. In 1993 the original UFO got back together (with Schenker) and the result was 1995's Walk on Water, which some consider to be one of the best comeback rock albums ever.
Schenker re-joined and quit UFO many times in the early 2000s. Due to Schenker's instability as a band member (and erratic tour behavior) Mogg eventually gained full control of the UFO band brand and Schenker is now forever from the picture (most likely).
UFO has released 20 studio albums, and many live/compilation albums. Though the lineup has changed many times over the years the core members of the band were usually involved along the way: Phil Mogg (vocals), Pete Way (bass), Andy Parker (drums), and Paul Raymond (guitar).
UFO's influence was strongly felt in the '80s metal scene and they have been cited as a primary influence of Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, and Iron Maiden who gives thanks to UFO in the liner note of The Number of the Beast.

We're not looking for eternity
So smile now
While you're looking for this serenity
He dozes out here in doorways
Caught between wars
Tells us something is coming
Won't reveal more
And kisses his ear
I guess all our time is running,
Running on fear
And it goes around,
Round, around again
Like a magic circle
Till it comes to the end
Baby
We're not looking for eternity
So smile now
While you're looking for serenity
Out from the marble palaces
Kings and queens Will rejoice
Their importance of being
Their importance of choice
And as they swung Mussolini
Like a chime in the breeze
The pope blessed his children
In a sea of sleaze
And it comes around,
Round, around again
Like a magic circle
Till it comes to the end
Baby
We're not looking for eternity
So smile now
While you're looking for serenity
Solo
And It still flowers
In springtime
Dogs howl at the moon
Now the funeral is leaving
To the general's own tune
All the rich and the famous
Don't know who I am
The jokers and the jugglers
Even the prince of Siam
And it goes around,
Round and round again
Like a magic circle
Till it comes to the end
Baby
We're not looking for eternity
Yeah, yeah
So smile now
While you're looking for serenity
Oh yeah
Baby
A little faith or charity
So smile now
While you're looking for serenity
Oh Baby
We're not looking for eternity
Hey,hey yeah
So smile now
While you're looking for eternity
Hey,hey yeah yeah
Baby
A little faith or charity
The song "Serenity" by UFO is a complex commentary on human nature, politics, religion, and mortality. The lyrics suggest that humans may be doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again, trapped in a "magic circle" until everything comes to an end. The song begins with the singer observing a homeless man, who seems to sense that something ominous is on the horizon. The singer's companion tries to comfort him by suggesting that they focus on finding a moment of peace ("serenity") in the present, rather than seeking eternal solutions.
The second verse of the song paints a picture of a world in which the powerful and the wealthy revel in their own importance, even as they remain ignorant of the struggles of ordinary people. The singer refers to historical figures like Mussolini, the Pope, and the Prince of Siam to underscore the idea that social status is ultimately meaningless in the grand scheme of things. The final verse of the song shifts focus to death, with the singer noting that even those who are famous and influential will eventually be forgotten. The only solace, the song suggests, is to find "a little faith or charity" and try to enjoy life in the here and now.
