When Daylight Goes To Town
UFO Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember you when you was me
Oh what a beautiful sight
You'd cool it up
Or you'd cool it down
From some dizzy, dizzy height

I can still hear that rolling sound
Like a diesel in my head
Sometimes I wake and I think of you now
Forgetting that you're dead

I was born on a rolling train
Runnin' when I hit the ground
I watch these wheels turning now
Nothing here, nothing left
Watching the daylight fade away
Watching the daylight go to town

Well
This hotel rooms like the wild, wild west
And there's strangers moving underground
I still have your photograph
It picks me up when I'm feeling down

Pull up a chair and you pour me one
Let's kick back and let it roll
There's nothing here
And there's nothing left
But watching the daylight go to town

We'd get swept up on a pillow fight
You just couldn't let it go
I watch these wheels turning now
Nothing here, nothing left
Watching the daylight fade away
Watching the daylight go to town

Don't you fade away

solo

Well I guess I'm walking right back home
Got to set this all down
Pull up a chair and you pour me two
'cause there's nothing here,nothing left
But watching the daylight turn around
Watching the daylight go to town

Watching this world spin around
Watching the daylight go to town

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of UFO's song "When Daylight Goes To Town" describe a nostalgic feeling towards someone who has passed away. The opening lines suggest that the singer used to be close to this person and was enamored by their presence. The line "You'd cool it up, or you'd cool it down" could be interpreted as the person being able to adapt to any situation. The following lines, "From some dizzy, dizzy height," could suggest that the person had a carefree nature and lived life to the fullest.

As the song progresses, the singer tells us that they often think of this person, forgetting that they have passed away, highlighting the emotional impact they had on their life. The middle section of the song describes the singer's birth on a train, emphasizing the constant motion and change that has been a part of their life. The line "Nothing here, nothing left" could suggest that the singer feels like there is nothing left for them, highlighting a feeling of emptiness.

The final verse describes the present situation in a hotel room, where the singer is feeling down but is comforted by a photograph of the person they are remembering. The song allows the singer to escape their feelings of emptiness by letting them "watch the daylight go to town." The song ends with the singer returning home and attempting to find solace in the mundane routine of their life.

My Mom always asks me what I want from her for a Christmas gift, and she always want's to spend $100 or more! One year I told her that all I wanted was this CD. She said "Are you serious?" Needless to say, this was my CD for my Christmas present from her. Probably the best Christmas ever!!!!!      UFO blowin' my stereo up on Christmas Day!!!!!!!

@JK's Street : Yes, I loved them with Michael Schenker especially, but they have Vinnie Moore (who's a fna of Schenker, anyway) on this album, and since then... although they're apprently retirnig this time...

JK's Street

One of the most underrated rock bands.Schenker on lead guitar is amazing. So are Mogg's vocals.

+David Lake good choice :) I did not kow much about UFO and after listening to 30 seconds of this song in a music store I thought to myself "man, I'm so buyin' this album" (and I bought)

I hold Michael Schenker as one of my favorite guitar-players but don't really understand why so many have something "against" UFO with other guitarists. Have they even tried to enjoy it? UFO has done a lot of albums over the years. How many of the "haters" have even heard "You Are Here" for example? I get the impression most haven't bothered with many songs at all and just put their "opinions" regarding a few song on 15 + albums..!

I Agree.

Marc Moingeon

I agree. They did very good albums with Paul Chapman (The Wild, The Willing and the Innocent and Mechanix, but I'm not too fond of the two others), the one with Atomik tommy isn't so bad, in spite of a very 80's cold sound, and !i do like th eones they did with Vinnie Moore, whose style I love, especially this one... But it's true my three favourite studio albums are Lights Out, Obsession, both featuring Michael Schenker and beautifully produced by Ron Nevison, with some occasional good orchestrations, and also No Heavy Pettin', when they started adding keyboards.
