Lights Out
UFO or Die Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wind blows back and the batons charging
It winds all the way
Right to the butt of my gun
Maybe now your time has come

From the back streets there's a rumbling
Smell of anarchy
No more nice time, bright boy shoe shines
Pie in the sky dreams

Lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight till the end
Better now you know we'll never
Wait till tomorrow
Lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight till the end
God knows when I'm coming on my run

Heaven help those who help themselves
That's the way it goes
The frightening thoughts of what's been taught
And now it shows

Lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight till the end
Better now you know we'll never
Wait till tomorrow
Lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight till the end
God knows when I'm coming on my run

Lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight till the end
Better now you know we'll never
Wait till tomorrow
Lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight till the end
God knows when I'm coming on my run

You keep coming, there's no running
Tried a thousand times
Under your feet grass is growing
Time we said goodbye

Lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight till the end
Better now you know we'll never
Wait till tomorrow
Lights out, lights out in London
Hold 'em tight till the end
God knows when I'm coming on my run

Lights out, lights out in London

Lights out, lights out in London

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Lights Out in London" by UFO or Die depict a sense of chaos and impending danger. The wind is blowing fiercely as the batons charge, and the smell of anarchy can be detected in the back streets. The singer of the song is armed and ready for action, suggesting that someone's time has come. The overall tone is one of urgency and a call to action.

The repeated refrain of "lights out in London" seems to be a metaphor for the end of something, possibly the end of an era or a particular way of life. The lyric "better now you know we'll never wait till tomorrow" adds to the sense of urgency, as if time is running out and action must be taken now. The references to "pie in the sky dreams" and "the frightening thoughts of what's been taught" suggest a disillusionment with lofty ideals and a desire for something more tangible.

Schenker has always been the most melodic and precise guitar player in rock, every note means something and not just inane twiddling of scales. His solos are pieces of art that should be more widely acknowledged.

Roth too

James Bartley

Indeed. Schenker's solos seem to tell a story if that makes any sense.

Jurgen Cuypers

He is pants without Mogg and Way and this since 40 years now.

The Lights Out album is one of my all time favorite albums, just incredible. Schenker's sound, the songs, Mogg's raw voice, the production, everything!

Michael; is one of the most fine guitar players in the World and in Rock history. He's a virtuoso. In my opinion, the best guitarist from Germany. His guitar parts and solos, are always complex, beautiful, intrincated and melodic.🎸

UFO is one of the greatly under rated bands from the 70's and early 80's they just played good rock and roll.Saw them in Sacramento California in 1981 with Aldo Nova was a great show.

Schenker is definitely a prime example of “your favorite guitarist’s favorite guitarist”. The licks were always just perfect to add in and elevate the tracks. The solos then come and they’re always blistering and high energy. You never get half assed stuff from Schenker

These guys were quite frankly one of the most underrated rock acts maybe ever! I enjoyed my teen years in the 70's and was lucky enough to see them live a few times and folks I'm telling you they were fantastic!
