Coming up for Air
UFX Lyrics

I'd stopped breathing
Till you told me you were leaving
Now you're no longer there
Honey I don't care
I'm coming up for air
I thought you were bluffing
Yeah you left me with nothing
Just an empty space to put stuff in
I just couldn't conceive
That you had something something up your sleeve
I just didn't believe
I just couldn't conceive
In your deep blue deceiving
I'd stopped breathing
Till you told me you were leaving
Now you're no longer there
Honey I don't care
I'm coming up for air
In your deep blue deceiving
I'd stopped breathing
Till you told me you were leaving
Now you're no longer there
Honey I don't care
I'm coming up for air
The lyrics to UFX's song "Coming Up For Air" explore the experience of being in a relationship that feels suffocating and stifling, only to have the other person suddenly leave and leave the singer feeling adrift. The metaphor of "deep blue deceiving" suggests that the relationship was like being underwater or drowning, with the singer struggling to breathe and stay afloat. However, when their partner leaves, they feel a sense of liberation and relief, even though it means being alone.
The singer's initial disbelief and sense of betrayal ("I thought you were bluffing...I just couldn't conceive that you had something up your sleeve") underscores the sense of uncertainty and instability that characterized the relationship. They were never sure where they stood with their partner, and the sudden departure only confirms this. However, even though they are left with "nothing" after the breakup, the singer is still determined to move forward and breathe again.
Overall, the lyrics to "Coming Up For Air" suggest a complicated mix of emotions - relief and sadness, freedom and uncertainty - that come with the end of a difficult relationship. It's a song that captures that feeling of finally taking a breath after being underwater for too long.
