I strongly recommend you watch "Madhumati", "Amrapali". But get to know the outline story before watching them. This was and still is my favourite Indian song. 20 years later I actually went to find the translation of the lyrics and I couldn't help but break down crying. I remember one day listening to this song over and over with my aunt, she passed away not too long after. She always had a different aura to her and I miss her dearly. Even though I don't understand the language, I know she did. So reading the translation for the first time I understood why she loved this song so much and it really uplifted me while I was in a very dark space. Lagaan is a near perfect movie. Fantastic story. Great cast. Lovely music. Brilliant performances. And the politics was also right. Genuine classic! The list of top 5 hindi movies ever made would be incomplete without this gem.

This song specially the lines sunn mitwa, I heard somewhere in 2004, but unable to trace the whereabouts of the song as I dint watch the movie yet. I found this song only today while searching national award songs of the winners. No doubt Udit Narayan deserves it very much!

Here in the UK, they showed a series of Bollywood's movies on Channel 4 around 2005. I decided to sit down and watch Lagaan although I knew nothing about the story, stars or music. I absolutely loved it. Mitwa has to be the best song

It's similar to me but I'm from the USA. Anyone going down this path should be very wary. While this is a great song and has a coveted spot on my player, India is plumb full of amazing songs. Radha Kaise Na Jale from this movie is another, especially if you watch the dancing.

With Latta Ji, Asha Ji, Shreya Ji, A. R. Rahman, Ilayaraja, 6000 languages, and many others there are so many 'best song ever's in India, there is not enough time in one life to hear them all.

Makes me suppose that if there is a heaven, it's got Indian music always playing in the background.

And we should not forget Pakistan, some of the great Indian songs are from Pakistan. My personal favorite is 'Agar Tum Mil Jao'.
