Ready to form another band after a five-year hiatus from music, Hailey went to see Grey perform with Mellowdrone. "I had been waiting to meet someone who had her talent and drive," Hailey says. "After hanging out a couple of times, it was obvious we were a great match." For her part, Grey says she was ready to leave behind session work and focus on a creative collaboration. "I've wanted to write and produce my own music, but was too busy touring as a background performer."
The result of their efforts was the EP I See Red, which was recorded over several months in a bedroom at Grey's Los Angeles home. ("Vocals were done in the bathroom," Hailey says, "it was very sexy.") Produced by Grey and mixed by Al Clay (who has worked with the Pixies, Frank Black, and Blur), I See Red, with its laser-sharp melodies, ethereal harmonies, lush string arrangements, and muscular drums, is a great introduction to the duo.
Less than a year after the release of I See Red, Uh Huh Her will unveil their full-length debut, the accessibly melodic Common Reaction, on August 19th. Produced by Al Clay … it was recorded in January at Clay’s L.A. studio, a world away from Grey’s bathroom …. The effort is an extension of the band’s previous musical foundation, as evidenced by focused tracks like "Not a Love Song," "Wait Another Day" and "Explode."
"We wrote a lot of it before we went in the studio, but we wound up re-cutting everything," Grey says of the 11-track album. "We wanted to make a commercially appealing record. The songs aren't specifically poppy but appeal to a wide variety of people."
"Sometimes the song just calls for it and you can't fight the pop," Hailey laughs. "I like that it's eclectic and not just one thing. That bores me in a record. We never wanted this band to be small."
Common Reaction is now available.

I'm all alone see
You lost me somehow
And what we're fighting for is peace
Are you still in love with me,
Or someone else?
Well are you such a dreamer?
Careful what you wish for love
(oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh)
I've seen the worst of you too
I let it go see
Because I have to
And when I'm falling on my knees
You'll take my hand in yours
What will be, we'll be
Cause are you such a dreamer?
Put yourself in my shoes
Careful what you wish for love
What's the matter with our ways
I'm missing something,
Not to blame
But don't you worry,
This will pass
It's only cause my mind's
Been spinning
No control,
I've lost my head
All of this is just beginning
Not enough,
It's never enough
I'll only want to keep on dreaming
Cause are you such a dreamer?
Put yourself in my shoes
Careful what you wish for love
(oooh)
Cause are you such a dreamer?
Put yourself in my shoes
Careful what you wish for love
(oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh)
The lyrics to Uh Huh Her's "Dreamer" speak to the confusion that can often come with the end of a relationship. The first verse finds the singer feeling lost and alone after being abandoned by someone they loved. They question whether that person is still in love with them or has moved on to someone else. The second verse acknowledges that both parties have flaws, but the singer has chosen to forgive and let go. They express faith that their partner will support them when things get tough.
The chorus asks the listener whether they are a dreamer like the singer--someone who believes in a better future--but warns them to be careful what they wish for. The final verse touches on the feeling of being adrift in the world, missing something vital but unable to pinpoint what it is. The singer is spinning out of control and lost in their own mind, but they still cling to the hope of dreaming and creating something better for themselves.
Overall, "Dreamer" is a song about the complexities of love, loss, and hope. It speaks to the contradictions that exist within our own minds and relationships, and the importance of persevering even when things seem impossible.
