Ready to form another band after a five-year hiatus from music, Hailey went to see Grey perform with Mellowdrone. "I had been waiting to meet someone who had her talent and drive," Hailey says. "After hanging out a couple of times, it was obvious we were a great match." For her part, Grey says she was ready to leave behind session work and focus on a creative collaboration. "I've wanted to write and produce my own music, but was too busy touring as a background performer."
The result of their efforts was the EP I See Red, which was recorded over several months in a bedroom at Grey's Los Angeles home. ("Vocals were done in the bathroom," Hailey says, "it was very sexy.") Produced by Grey and mixed by Al Clay (who has worked with the Pixies, Frank Black, and Blur), I See Red, with its laser-sharp melodies, ethereal harmonies, lush string arrangements, and muscular drums, is a great introduction to the duo.
Less than a year after the release of I See Red, Uh Huh Her will unveil their full-length debut, the accessibly melodic Common Reaction, on August 19th. Produced by Al Clay … it was recorded in January at Clay’s L.A. studio, a world away from Grey’s bathroom …. The effort is an extension of the band’s previous musical foundation, as evidenced by focused tracks like "Not a Love Song," "Wait Another Day" and "Explode."
"We wrote a lot of it before we went in the studio, but we wound up re-cutting everything," Grey says of the 11-track album. "We wanted to make a commercially appealing record. The songs aren't specifically poppy but appeal to a wide variety of people."
"Sometimes the song just calls for it and you can't fight the pop," Hailey laughs. "I like that it's eclectic and not just one thing. That bores me in a record. We never wanted this band to be small."
Common Reaction is now available.

We'll be forgotten
It's a sad sad world we're in
To not believe something
And we'll stop the world from falling
Just to stay alive
And I say don't ask me why
Do I disbelieve, tell me
Everyone is telling us
Something's wrong with us
Everyone is saying
We're lost somehow
I wanna know
Do you believe in something
Everyone seems to have lost themselves
I just need a sign
That we have found one voice
Cause it's a mad mad world I see
To end up with nothing
So we fight for what is right
With no compromise
And I say please ask me why
I believe in living, tell me
Everyone is telling us
Something's wrong with us
Everyone is saying
We're lost somehow (oh)
I wanna know
Do you believe in something
Everyone seems to have lost themselves
The lyrics of "Everyone" by Uh Huh Her sound like a call to action for people to believe in something, to fight for what is right and not just to survive but to live. The song portrays a sad world where people no longer believe in anything and have lost themselves. The line "Long lives the fear, we'll be forgotten" shows the fear that people have of being forgotten, of living a life without meaning or purpose. The singer questions why people have lost faith and disbelieve in things, asking "Do I disbelieve, tell me". She goes further to say that she believes in living, not just surviving but thriving.
The chorus of the song is particularly interesting as it portrays the general feeling of the world towards people who try to believe in something. "Everyone is telling us something's wrong with us" portrays the negative reaction people get when they try to believe in something. They are looked at as different and abnormal, and the world tries to convince them that there is something wrong with them. The "lost somehow" line further emphasizes this ideology of the world, that when someone is trying to find purpose, they are lost.
In the end, the song seems to be a rallying cry for people to find something to believe in and to fight for it. The singer wants people to find one voice, to fight for what is right and live, not just to survive. It's a song that encourages people to be true to themselves, to not be swayed by the negativity of the world, and to keep living with purpose.
