John Smatla, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, did some great music jobs as keyboardist in NY. Dave Stryker, originally from Omaha, Nebraska, is a well-established guitarist in NY's jazz scene. His other projects are Stryker Slage band, The Blue To The Bone band, Trio Mundo, The Shades Project and The Dave Stryker Big Band.

Ultrablue is the living proof that established jazz musicians are no jazz purists and also like to play melodious smooth jazz. Their first album was "Dusked 2 Dawn", released in April 2003 on the Khaeon label. A label with the impetus to release the music of jazz professionals which are hardly instantly recognizable to the general public because they are mostly playing in the second row behind the jazz giants. The farsightedness of Khaeon unfortunately wasn't paired with economical success. That lead to the decision to change to a different label. The new album is released by 215 Records, a label with more promotional power and a roster of successful smooth jazz artists like Soul Ballet, e.s.t., Bob Baldwin, Steve Briody, Greg Adams, Gene Dunlap and more.

Great review, as always Alexander! Full of detail, explanation and passion. I love the look of this watch. I can bet if this came in 40mm case size, it will sell like nobodies business, especially if the 3-rings can have that tri-colore Zenith identity.

But the star is clearly....theat 9004 movement. One of my favourite movements, very unique and a very true to Zenith DNA.

I love Zenith, I love underdogs... bought the defy classic 3 weeks ago and love it to bits. I only wish the bracelet would have half links to make it fit well. Now the watch is unwearable for me because of this. Zenith MUST finish their watches in total, not only the watch itself but the bracelet as well. It’s going to make me think again next time I am in the market for a watch. Customer satisfaction is key for returning customers, especially foe the underdogs, they need to go the extra mile. Alexander, you are a crusader for letting us see the watches in person. I hope you don’t mind me for having this little rant, but I hope Zenith gets to read this and acknowledge what their customers’ experience is with their products...

This looks fantastic, that flying 100th counter is mesmerizing, like you Alexander I do wonder what practical use in real life it would be. I guess if you were timing laps of a race it would be a good guide as the brain to pusher would be more consistent and give a view of a slightly faster or slower lap. The contrast between grey and blue looks add some contrast. I'm not yet sure if it would creep onto my watch want list yet. There are many other new models coming out.

You always need to try a watch on your wrist and see it under all kind of watch conditions before being able to make a final decision... Therefore get the Defy on your wrist! ;-)

Can you please comment on the robustness of the microblasted case? Is it scratch resistant? Can scratches be rectified? I noticed a scratch on the case on your sample - 17 mins 10- looks like a scratch on the case - visible and running down from 25-30 on the calibration track (near the crown).

I really was t this watch but I am keen to know your thoughts on this topic?

As you clearly understood is that I did not try to find an excuse by writing this... I know in fact that these pre-series watches very often come in "horrible" conditions... I love the way you see a watch... it has to be worn and slo might "collect" some scratches over the years... That's just natural and infuses life ... A watch should be a time-safe, should tell stories when you look at it by reminding you of a particular moments of your life ... The most important though is that your watches will always show you HAPPY seconds, minutes and hours...

@WatchAdvisor Agreed and it’s a nice way to look at it! I tend to really ‘use’ my watches as tool watches and some materials age well with scratches but others really do not.

Every surface is sensible to scratches depending on what you do... Some of the watches I get for filming are from travel-collections that tour the world, go through lots of handling stress and often are not treated correctly ... I would see it the other way round and write: There was only one little scratch!

The calibre with its two escapements and barrels is quite big... almost impossible to downsize the case...

Unless I buy a race horse with it, I have really no idea what the hell I could measure with that chrono. Then again, I never dive further down than 5 meters either and my chances for a lunar mission can be considered as non existent. I really do love that Zenith!

@WatchAdvisor Since many user complaint that the clasp on defy. 21 is pretty sharp. Zenith release a new ver clasp which is rejigged you can buy it from bt.

1. You say that like it’s a bad thing. There is nothing wrong with Hublot.
2. This Zenith doesn’t really look like a Hublot. Not the Classic Fusion nor the Big Bang. The rest are quite unique and some are just outlandish.
3. All watch makers copy design elements from each other.
