Ulver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sagte vender hun Hovedet halfft
Lyddende fjærnt til Ord som bli'r talt
Et Stæd under Bakken, om Hiertets Vee

[Pigen:]
"Sola gaar bak Aase ned
Skuggan' bli saa lange
Natte kjem snart atteved
Teke meg i Fange"

De Taaren dend fulgte hendes Savn
Een Længsel hiem til siine
Hun vilde saa gierne hafve dem i siin Favn
Sorrigen sadte Rood i navnløs Piine

Hun graader
Hun falmer
Hun seer ey paa Nattesti

Hun falder i Sofn paa Moseseng
Oc aldting tier

Saa dæcker et Mulm
Hendes Drømmers Stier

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ulver's song, "Svelen Gaaer Bag Aase Need" is a beautifully woven story of a girl in pain and her longing for her loved ones. The first two lines describe her turning her head halfway, listening to distant words being spoken. She is grounded in her heartache, and her troubles seem to be carved deep beneath the earth. Then the girl speaks, "The sun sets beyond the Aase hill, shadows grow long and the night will soon come to take me prisoner". She is waiting for the night to come and take her away from the pain she is experiencing in the day.

The following lines describe her tears that follow her longing for her people. She wishes to hold them tight and feel their presence in that moment of loneliness. The sadness sits heavy in her heart, and it is nameless agony that she can't put into words. She cries, fades, and stops paying attention to the pathway of the night.

Finally, she falls asleep on a bed of moss while everything around her turns silent. She dreams of a world where she can be free of her sorrow where her loved ones will be with her. Through the words of the song, Ulver paints a poignant image of a girl in pain, holding onto some distant hope that someday she will find solace.

I don’t believe vocals in black metal ever got this good. 5:08 I feel transported on a mystical journey.

Maybe the best song Ulver has made! Best Norwegian black metal album of the golden age, that's for sure!

@Knochenbrigade

Maaan, i wish they would play music like this again, just for one album at least...

@thewildhealer541

I also wonder why they never made a black metal album after Nattens Madrigal?
