Synen
Ulver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Der du stod som ung
Og rundt deg stønning tung
Var skyggens trolske dans
Kan hende leder den frem en tår
Av det deg atter tiden giver
Tiden vokst seg noen år
Trass følelsen forbliver
Du stod taus i sorte lunde
Full av sorg og savn
Fra din sjel er faldt av minde
Og deg trolldom ville binde
Den skatt du hadde ved navn
Den skatt du hadde ved navn

Aaaah, synen
I natt er den

Den er under
Jorden en gang

Overall Meaning

The song "Synen" by Ulver, is a beautiful and melancholic piece with profound lyrics that invoke a sense of mystery and wonder. The song speaks to the memory of a young person, who is standing in a dark forest, surrounded by sorrowful murmurs, while a sinister dance of shadows unfolds around them. The lyrics suggest that, perhaps, this dance of shadows will lead to a moment of clarity, where the person will be granted a gift from time, a treasure that they once had but lost. Although time has passed, the feeling remains steadfast and unyielding. The young person stands silently, in a black grove, filled with grief and longing, as the memory of the past escapes their soul. The song is a reminder that even in times of darkness, the light of memory can shine through and guide us to a better understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Moreover, the lyrics speak of synen - a vision or glimpse of something beyond human understanding or rational explanation. The song suggests that synen is not something that can be forced or conjured up, but rather it is something that arises naturally and unpredictably. In this way, synen becomes a metaphor for the unknown and mysterious forces of life that we are constantly wrestling with. The lyric "I natt er den, den er under, jorden en gang" states that synen is here, now, but will eventually be buried deep beneath the earth, lost forever.

@nordriket

Vow. Such a beautiful song. I never heard this before. You can hear Garms vocal is a little different than on Kveldssanger and even more than on Bergtatt. It is more in the style of Borknagar - The olden domain. He was and will always be an incredible talented musician, composer and singer. Even though I don't enjoy all of his later works.
