The Argument
Ulver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rintrah roars & shakes his fires in the burden'd air;
Hungry clouds swag on the deep.

Once meek, and in a perilous path,
The just man kept his course along
The vale of death.
Roses are planted where thorns grow,
And on the barren heath
Sing the honey bees.

Then the perilous path was planted:
And a river and a spring
On every cliff and tomb:
And on the bleached bones
Red clay brought forth.

Till the villain left the paths of ease,
To walk in perilous paths, and drive
The just man into barren climes.

Now the sneaking serpent walks
In mild humility,
And the just man rages in the wilds
Where lions roam.

Rintrah roars & shakes his fires in the burden'd air;
Hungry clouds swag on the deep.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ulver's song The Argument are deeply symbolic and offer a vivid portrayal of the battle between good and evil. The first stanza depicts Rintrah, a mythical figure associated with revolution and change, roaring and shaking his fires in the burdened air. This sets the tone for the rest of the song, which describes the state of the world as a place of hunger and turmoil, where even the clouds hang heavy with the weight of despair.

The second stanza goes on to describe the journey of the just man, who was once meek but determined to stay on the path of righteousness, even in the face of death. He journeys through a barren land, and though he faces many obstacles, he plants roses where thorns once grew and brings forth honey bees on the barren heath. However, his journey becomes even more perilous when the villain begins to walk in the same path, seeking to drive the just man into barren climes.

The third stanza contrasts the just man's journey with that of the sneaking serpent, who walks in mild humility while the just man now rages in the wilds. This suggests that the world has become a place of confusion and disorder, where good must fight against evil in order to survive. The repeated refrain of Rintrah roaring and shaking his fires reinforces this sense of struggle and unrest, creating a powerful image of a world in crisis.

Still one of the best albums ever made, I fucking love this thing

@Szaam

Ulver, as an entity, is a completely unique musical experience entirely. I wish that some people could move on from the fact that they stopped making black metal fourteen years ago and embrace the genius that is this band.

No one can show anyone else the truth. If one truely seeks it in their heart they will start the path to truth which takes ones whole life to reach the destination.
