Umpah-Pah by Catalanix Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take a little walk to the edge of town
Go across the tracks
Where the viaduct looms, ilke a bird of doom
As it shifts and cracks
Where secrets lie in the border fires, in the humming wires
Hey man, you knowyou′re never coming back
Past the square, past the bridge, past the mills, past the stacks
On a gathering storm comesa tall handsome man
In a dusty black coat witha red right hand
He'll wrap you in his arms, tell you that you′ve been a good boy
He'll rekindle all the dreamsit took you a lifetime to destroy
He'll reach deep into the hole, heal your shrinking soul
Hey buddy, you know you′renever ever coming back
He′s a god, he's a man, he′s a ghost, he's a guru

They′re whispering his namethrough this disappearing land
But hidden in his coatis a red right hand

Overall Meaning

The beginning of Catalanix's song 903, Umpah-Pah, takes the listener on a walk to the edge of town where there's a railroad crossing and a viaduct that feels ominous, like a "bird of doom", due to the shifting and cracking it produces. The vibrant imagery of the lyrics sets the tone of the song and sets up a sense of unease that carries on throughout the rest of the lyrics. The song then reveals that there are secrets that lie within the border fires and humming wires, almost as if there's some sort of danger lurking nearby. The towering figure of a man in a dusty black coat and a red right hand soon appears and becomes the focus of the song. The overall idea present here is the theme of a deal with the devil as the figure with the red right hand is capable of making all your dreams true, but at a deadly cost. This song tells a story of being drawn into the darkness, to where one realizes that they will never be the same and can never go back.
