Hey Josh ... great discovery.

This is consistent with my observation that the zeds resist pathing away from you horizontally before coming back to you.

Also #2 ... as their first option they seem to no longer climb vertically to your elevation before pathing horizontally.

Take your corridor of death base ... now a significant number of the zeds will attack the tower you are standing on. If you build a floating base, they will crawl underneath your rather than pathing back away and up the stairs again.

It seems that the rule is: Every next movement must bring the zeds closer to their target. If they can't get closer, destroy something "in the way" or "close by".

The solution I have found is to cantilever your horizontal fighting platform 7+ blocks (7 seems to be the magic number) from the support wall -- the platform needs to be 7+ blocks off the ground (looks like an upside down "L"). You will still have ~40% of zeds who will group directly underneath where you are standing (and they will 'magically' follow your position underneath if you move even though they can't see you). ~60% of zeds will still path up your stairs to your fighting position if you make enough noise -- if you melee then you need to switch out to shoot a few zeds periodically. A simple chute for pipe bombs, grenades etc. or a way to shoot exploding bolts/arrows/rockets is sufficient to deal with the zeds underneath.

Fun and games, right?

how to fix this as programmer,
make new AI pathing systems

path A : fastest way to the target
path B : least resistance way to the target
path C : shortest way to the target
path D : current one

do while TRUE
{
at horde night, and with every wave , assign the 4 pathing AIs to 4 different zombies and spawn them in same location

after some time, check which one is most successful one, then assign that winning AI path to the reset of the zombies
}

I remember back in the day me and my friends built a base into the side of the mountain. Our entrance was a corrider in which the zombies would funnel in and then we would shoot them/traps in a side room as they tried to break down the door. We thought this was genius, started reinforcing our base from the front moving backwords. Blood Moon rolls around and were just sitting their waiting... and waiting. Finally they come... however, the AI thought it was easier for the zombies to tunnel through the mountain from the back then try and break through the door

That makes sense with zombie pathing. The entrance was too hard so they went through the softer materials to get in. You needed to build a cement/metal lining to prevent that.

I think everyone learns this lesson the hard way šŸ˜‚. Mountain cave was my favorite type of failed base

You didnā€™t build anything around you? Was it just a dirt cavern? That sounds like a fun base tbh

elitearbor

Wait, does that... does that mean that we could have a straight shot up to an elevated base, complete with a ladder to the ground, if the path first has to go down a couple of blocks? I'm going to have to test that.

@Tj Ace Saying 'your' instead of 'you're' while telling people they're wrong is sad.

@elitearbor YOur Both Wrong

I mean a straight shot, no jumping up a couple of blocks, no door, no hatch, just open. I think it's doable with how the zombie AI currently is!

Galaxis

Maybe, but isn't it always easier to just have it up two blocks?

What if you replace the dirt/ground with concrete blocks? would they "digg" through them, or go for an easier way?
