Teenage Kicks

Everytime she walks down the street
Another girl in the neighbourhood
Wish she was mine, she looks so good
I wanna hold her, wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night
Have her over 'cause I'm all alone
I need excitement, oh, I need it bad
And it's the best I've ever had
I wanna hold her, wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night, all right
Are teenage dreams so hard to beat?
Everytime she walks down the street
Another girl in the neighbourhood
Wish she was mine, she looks so good
I wanna hold her, wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night, all right
I'm gonna call her on the telephone
Have her over 'cause I'm all alone
I need excitement, oh, I need it bad
And it's the best I've ever had
I wanna hold her, wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night, all right
I wanna hold her, wanna hold her tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night, all right
Undertones’ song “Teenage Kicks” speaks to the universal experience of teenage angst and the desire for companionship and excitement. The song centers around the singer’s infatuation with a girl in his neighborhood who he wishes was his. The lyrics capture the feeling of being a teenager and the intensity of emotions that come with it. The line “I need excitement, oh, I need it bad” sums up the longing for adventure and passion that is common during this stage of life. The repetition of the chorus “I wanna hold her, wanna hold her tight, get teenage kicks right through the night” also highlights the importance of physical connection and feeling alive.
The song’s upbeat tempo and catchy melody have contributed to its lasting popularity and its place as a classic punk-rock anthem. The song has been covered by several artists and was even chosen by John Peel as his favorite song of all time. The simplicity and honesty of the lyrics make it relatable to people of all ages and continue to make it a beloved song decades after its release.
