Hey
Underwater Getdown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey (repeated)

Bookends lash out forces
Hundreds of thousands of pages
Somehow print and
Casting a shadow of guilt
Try to cop out
Sometimes you need to try harder
Breakout bracer standby

Temper instinct selfish
I wish i could be on an airplane
Crashing solo first class
Siderope friction barefoot
I'm outside of the world

I can't see right through the raindrops
I can't stop in time to take you
Lights flashing
Cars passing

I can't see right through the raindrops
I can't stop in time to take you
Lights flashing
Cars passing

I can't see right through the raindrops
I can't stop in time to take you
Lights flashing
Cars passing

Rough road white lines shoulder
Yellow side of the 10 and

It's airborne mismatched streaks on the windshield
Oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Underwater Getdown's song Hey are quite abstract but offer a poetic reflection on feelings of guilt, failure and escape. The first few lines set the tone for the song, with the imagery of "bookends" lashing out and "casting a shadow of guilt." This could be interpreted as feeling overwhelmed by the weight of knowledge and responsibility, and struggling to cope with these pressures. However, the lyrics then suggest a desire to escape or "breakout" from these feelings, with the idea of crashing solo in first class and being outside of the world. This could imply a desire for freedom and a break from the confines of responsibility.

As the song progresses, the lyrics become more disjointed, with the repetition of "Hey" and fragmented images of raindrops, lights flashing and cars passing. This could represent a sense of disorientation or confusion, as the singer tries to navigate their feelings and surroundings. The final lines of the song describe a "rough road" and "mismatched streaks on the windshield," which could symbolize the challenges and obstacles that the singer is facing in their attempt to break free from their feelings of guilt and escape.

Overall, the lyrics to Hey provide a complex and intriguing exploration of themes of guilt, escapism, and the challenges of navigating our emotions and responsibilities. The song is open to interpretation, but offers compelling imagery and a sense of searching for meaning and direction.
