@alberlos Rachmaninov's style is not "unique", in the sense that no one else has composed music like his', but it is (at least for me), the peak of romantic piano writing. And that is another great success, imo.

No. 4 is my favorite Rachmaninoff's piece and also my favorite classical piece of all time. It's powerful and gentle at the same time, extremely melodious. I listen to this every single day and I'm dreaming of playing it myself. I've been playing the piano since I was 8 (I'm 22 now) and I once tried to learn it with my piano teacher a few years ago but struggled too much (I have small hands). But I won't give up, I will try to play it again, I don't care if it takes months for me to learn it, I will do it !

@william sackelariou It's certainly one of the best miniatures for solo piano ever written. Bear in mind it's under four minutes long, so you can hardly compare it to a concerto or a sonata.

I’ve said it before and will say it until I die, I love looking at Rachmaninoff’s scores (though they intimidate me greatly)
There is just so much going on, I could imagine his sheet music being turned into some sort of impressionistic artwork. So many notes, voices, lines and not to mention the beautiful sound which these notes represent.

I absolutely love the way Lugansky brings out the left-hand counter-melody in 33/4. For some reason, the two etudes that Rach. left out of his set are my two favorites of the op. 33 set (#3 and #4, although they're all great). And L's sense of stillness and beauty in in 33/3 is just perfect.

Rachmaninoff was a master of music language, in the sense that he always managed to communicate what was inside of him when composing. There are no fragments in his music where you could say: "ah, this is just stuffing", or "he wanted to use this progression because of lacking of ideas"... absolutely not. Those melodies, those progressions are there because they are meant to be there, always surprising us with new "harmonic nuances" that only a full, opened-up emotional palette of a man could achieve. I'm listening to this right now: 9:23 That progression, totally unexpected, evolves to a delicious climax that, again, melts down to darkness. But after 9:56, in the last measure, the change from a dark E minor to that almost-F major! Rachmaninoff strikes us with a last breath, a nostalgic moment of a melody ascending up, wanting to reach something... while a chromatic voice descends, giving this passage the perfect amount of expression. There is nothing you could ask for after hearing this, because it opens up all your emotional being and plays with it like a toy.

I agree, but I really hate that in some of the pieces, there aren't even rests (or at least they are so short I can't even hear a legit pause and enjoy some silence between the notes).

You might be right if we talk about this cycle only, but if you look at the long--form pieces , Rakhmaninov struggled with many of them for years if not decades .The most outstanding example is 4th concert , he began probably in 1914 and completed the 3rd (and most common) edition in 1928 . This concert at least has a final , and that's why I personally like it far more than the rest three. And I'm not the only one - for example Horowitz didn't like 2nd concert, he found its final very lack of ideas and even asked to play an orchestral part at some places, cz the piano part was insanely trivial and plain.

I have to say that I love having the score on the screen. Sometimes I like to see the pianist’s hands, to see just what they’re doing, but why do that when you can have the score and see exactly what they’re doing? Sometimes its’ quite surprising. Always interesting!

I've finally finished No.4! This video was great help for me and I recommend other piano player to play this piece.

I also have some advice to help people who have never played a Rachmaninoff song before. Firstly, THIS SONG IS HARD! So take your time and play a lot of hand separate. I know its boring, but if you don't break down this song in hand separate it will be very difficult to learn. Just play one section of the piece hand separate, then play hands together once you have hand separate down. Then repeat till the end of the song. Always count! This one might be obvious, but I know people who don't count, and they always rush. Always count to keep the tempo at a steady pace. Lastly always write down accidentals, this piece is full of accidentals so make sure you write it down so you don't forget. It's also good to mark accents, different dynamics and other things that effect the piece. And that's about it! Just take things slow and you will have a good time playing this piece :).

I love Ashkenazy - had the pleasure of meeting him once and having an unforgettable conversation - but I do think 33/4 benefits from a slower tempo i.e. Lugansky. The soprano line shortly after the chromatic ascent (near the end) is just too exquisite for words and feels monumentally Russian when played this way.

If you listen through number 3, when it gets past the andante like section, into the agitato section, you can hear insane similarities between it and and I believe his 3rd concerto (I’m having trouble remembering which one but I’m pretty sure)

The left hand of this part requires a huge flexible hand and insanely tricky control (whether we will played it exactly or with some arpeggios. Of course too much use of pedal is out of question if we want to observe the contrast between legato and stacatto). I really want the third hand.

Op. 39 for me is far superior as 5, 7, and 9 are VERY powerful and profound. 5 sounds like your quintessential high end night club/lounge music, 7 like something you listen to in private as you gain profound insight and spiritual wisdom, and 9 puts you in an epic mood. As for me, only number 1 of this set speaks to me.

What's even more fun than listening to these etudes, are attempting to play them. YIKES! Luckily I almost play through all of 7, can play through a couple pages of 5 (slowly) and 9, don't get me started on the intricacy of that might #9!

Op. 39, for me, is a perfect set of music. In terms of sheer refinement, I don't think this set compares at all. That being said, I still love most of this set. No.s 3, 4, and 5 are definitely the highlights for me. On the other hand, the opening of No. 6 pains me every time I hear it.

I don't see it quite as binarily as you but, if I were to force my perspective a little I'm Op. 39 all the way. Try as I might, I just can't consider them on the same planet. Op. 39 is just so much more interesting to me. It starts with a swirling, inexorable thing always on the edge of climax. Next is a lonely and desolate piece in stark contrast. Then a swirling and violent, almost possessed piece returns us back to a state of frenzy. After that comes a stately and regal thing almost like a brief moment of control only for the people are around us. Next is possibly the most emotional of the set, an impassioned thing, almost as if the stately appearance has been crushed. Then a frantic and uncontrollable thing, as if in our violent outburst we have done irreparable damage. After that comes possibly the most despairing of all of Rachmaninoff's etudes, almost as if we regret our decisions, it melts into bells and then nothing. The last is the only Major key etude of the set. It is bombastic and triumphant, not happy, but triumphant. Wow, I'm kinda surprised by my own tangent, but I digress. As much as I love some of the Op. 33 Etudes (F-Minor, D-Minor, E-flat Major, and A-Minor in particular) I just don't think they compare.

I may be a little biased because I've listened to the Op. 39 etudes every day for the past 2+ years and I am MUCH more familiar with them. I would also like to point out how much of a Rach fan I am. Even these, which I think of as inferior to Op. 39, are some of my favorite piano works of all time.

@Gustav Mahler I've always thought Ashkenazy's version is better. I love the way he plays it with so much ease and energy at the same time, never failing to emphasize the melody throughout. Lugansky's version is more poetic and I see his point, but for my ears Ashkenazy's tempo is perfect for the etude.

There is a generational factor involved here, styles and conceptions obviously evolve, eg as a music student during the 1960s I heard as saw such names as Richter, Ashkenazy, Pollini, Arrau and Kempff to name but a few who were star names on the world recital circuit at that time. During those years I always found Richters and the young Ashkenazys interpretations of Rachmaninov especially convincing, their technical mastery was such that for me they truly penetrated the interior sound world of the composer.
Subsequently there are of course far younger names nowadays giving very different but no less convincing accounts of these masterworks.

Might one's preference depend on the pianists' schooling and age and the same criteria for listeners? Some people grow used to a style or styles of playing and find playing that deviates from that or those styles less interesting, less satisfying. Others may have grown used to a style or styles of playing but welcome hearing works played differently from the style or styles to which they're accustomed.
I'm less familiar with Rachmaninov than with Beethoven, so I'll take Beethoven to continue my thought. I have friends who grew up with Artur Schnabel's interpretation of the Beethoven sonatas (fewer now -- live; most -- with recordings). Several of them, after hearing younger pianists, have told me the "youngsters" lack something that Schnabel found and transmitted in his playing. I may be mistaken, but am inclined to believe these friends listen to Beethoven with "Schnabel" ears and hence cannot perhaps find what makes the "youngsters'" playing interesting, even thrilling, depending of course on the work.

The etudes-tableaux have always been a mystery to me but finally. listening to the amazing Ashkenazy version here they come into focus! Lugansky, although brilliant technically. sees them as studies but Ashkenazy seems to understand this music from the inside out and the difference is staggering. I didn't listen to the Sofronitsky: his piano was too weird from the start. I will want to hear these again but I doubt I will find anything comparable to Ashkenazy. I have to say though that I have often been disappointed by Ashkenazy performances. But not here!

Anyone who likes this should drop what they are doing and order / download the complete Etude-Tableaux by Lugansky. I've heard particular pieces better - for example, Cliburn's E Flat Minor recording (Op 39) was the definitive version though at the height of his powers. But as a group this recording tops the chart. Note that Lugansky did not engage in the irritating"speed games" so beloved of new artists. I bought the Brilliant Classic (3 cd) version that also had the preludes by Marietta Petkova

In the 5th piece why are there no numbers indicating the irregular groups in 12/8? Seems to me obscuring the rhythmic notation particularly in some certain measures.

Im quite sure that Lugansky played a wrong note at exactly 11:43. Pretty sure that the C sharp in the right hand is supposed to be natural.
Also, at exactly 17:45, the b flats in both hands are supposed to be natural, too.

Pretty sure that this isn't an edition problem because I've went through a lot of editions to realise that he did play these wrong

Everything Rachmaninoff wrote is always loud chords and banging away at the keyboard. The only piano works that aren't are transcriptions of his songs like from op. 21 and 34.
