In late 2010 the band's bandcamp account featured their single ‘Ffunny Ffrends’, a sort of alien beatnik pop music that echoed 60s psychedelia and krautrock minimalism with just a hint of gentle weirdness that suggested its roots might equally lie in the verdant indie of the equally distant New Zealand scene.
Ruban Nielson is a New Zealand native who transplanted to Portland, Oregon, USA with his band The Mint Chicks. UMO was a project conceived as Ruban’s escape hatch to a new musical dimension where his vision of junkshop record collector pop could be realised in a sound that recalled Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone and RZA jamming on some kids TV theme too dark to ever be broadcast.
The eponymous UMO debut album was released in 2011 on Fat Possum Records, followed by II (2013), Multi-Love (2015), Sex & Food (2018), IC-01 Hanoi (2018) and V (2023).
Can’t Keep Checking My Phone
Unknown Mortal Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Me for her for real it's
Lust the love can't be heard above
Everyone acts like a day drinker
(Yeah)
We eat crickets
In the future
"Far-from-home"
Drink Chicha
In the Jungle
That sounds great, kinda busy
Could you call back again?
I'm sure you'll come back
'Til then I
I can't keep checking my phone (no)
I can't keep checking my phone (no)
I can't keep checking my phone (no)
I can't keep checking my phone (no)
We read the universe might be holographic
Traffic lights might reverse my love
Go ahead and traverse the winter (yeah)
We eat crickets
In the future
Just tastes like
"Far-from-home"
Drink Chicha
In the Jungle
That sounds great
I'm kinda busy, could you call back again?
I'm sure you'll come back
Til then I
I can't keep checking my phone (no)
I can't keep checking my phone (no)
I can't keep checking my phone (no)
I can't keep checking my phone
The opening line is a reference to the Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, which is a natural light display in the Earth's sky. The second line seems to talk about the singer's infatuation with someone named Aurora, saying their feelings for her are real but driven by lust rather than love. The following line "Lust the love can't be heard above" suggests that the singer's attraction to Aurora is louder and more overpowering than any genuine feelings of love.
The next line shifts to a broader observation of the world around them, with the singer stating that everyone seems to act like they are constantly drinking, or "day drinking" as it were. This could be a commentary on how society copes with the stresses of daily life, turning to alcohol to help numb their emotions.
The chorus is a repetition of the phrase "I can't keep checking my phone" four times, indicating either boredom, disinterest, or exhaustion from the constant communication through modern technology. The second verse then introduces the idea that the universe might be holographic, which is a theory in physics that suggests that the universe could be a hologram. The following lines seem to talk about the duality of love and how it can be both positive ("my love") and negative ("reverse my love") like a traffic light that both stops and starts.
The overall theme of the lyrics is a juxtaposition between the natural world, represented by the Northern Lights and consuming insects and traditional food, and the modern world, represented by checking phones and engaging with hologram theories. The chorus serves as a commentary on how the constant use of technology can be detrimental to one's mental and emotional health, suggesting that the singer needs a break from the constant communication.

Great Album, It takes me back when I would listen to my dad's collection of music he had from the 60's and 70's. Of course with a modern funk, hip hop drums and baseline.

Been listening to this song since '15 and still have no idea what they're saying, but their songs are so good. I can't be bothered to check the lyrics. I can't explain it, but sometimes songs are better when you don't know what's being said. (I'm not necessarily saying that's the case with this song.) Perhaps I'd understand the music video if I knew the lyrics lol
