Story of My Life
Unrelated Segments Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well let me tell you the story of my life
I loved this girl this lovely girl that I asked to be my wife
She said she would like first of all, she'd want a shiny ring
Well I got that girl that diamond ring
Well money never brings well I should know
No, you can't buy love
No, you can't buy love
She took my love for her own, she took my money too
When it was all but over I was broke and feeling blue
Well hear my friends the words I say, I's true and you will find
Some girl may take your money but she'll never need your time
No, you can't buy love
No, you can't buy love

Now hear me out and take advice the words I'm gonna say
For if you don't you'll never know someday she'll come your way
She'll come to you with eyes of love but still you'll never tell
Though money can buy many things but love you can not sell
No, you can't buy love
No, you can't buy love

Well this has been the story yes the story of my life
You'll never know the pain I feel but I know it's just not right
So wait until the right girl come the girl who needs just you
For if she needs your money then you tell that girl you're through
No, you can't buy love
No, you can't buy love

No, you can't buy love
No, you can't buy love

Overall Meaning

The Unrelated Segments’ song ‘Story of My Life’ tells a tale of heartbreak and loss, warning listeners of the perils of seeking love through material means. The singer shares his personal story of being smitten by a girl and proposing to her. The girl reciprocates his love but makes a demand for a diamond ring before they get married. The singer fulfills her request and eventually finds himself bankrupt and alone, having lost both his love and his money.

The song’s central message is that love cannot be bought, and those who attempt to do so will ultimately find themselves unhappy and disillusioned. The singer implores his listeners to avoid his mistakes and wait for the right person who will love them for who they are, not for what they can offer in terms of material goods.

Although the song’s message may seem simplistic, the band’s performance adds a layer of complexity to it. The driving beat and searing guitar riffs convey a sense of urgency and desperation that heightens the emotional impact of the lyrics. The band’s raw and unpolished sound epitomizes the garage rock genre and captures the gritty reality of the singer’s life.

I was also 14 when this came out, a great time to be young! My memory isn't very good these days (too much weed!!) Music was my life, like so many of us in those days. This was one of my favorite songs by a long shot.

Even though he was a "local" I was only into Segar during his early songs.

The Underdogs "Loves Gone Bad" was another favorite, done by a group from Grosse Pointe when they were at Austin Catholic Prep High School. I briefly attended Austin when they were there.

They recorded it at the famous house on W. Grand Boulevard now called "Hitsville".

Kudos to your memory, dude!!

The story of my life

And she took my money, too

I was broke and feelin’ blue

Now, hear me friends, to which I say
Ask true and you will find
Some girl that’ll take your money
But she’ll never need your time

The words I’m gonna say
For if you don’t, you never know
Someday she’ll come your way

She’ll come to you with eyes of love
But still, you’ll never tell
For money can buy many things
But love, you just can’t sell

I bought the 45rpm when it first came out, most kids like me at 9/10 years old had a transistor radio glued to our ears.
Living in Detroit, of course we had the powerful CKLW of Canada that predominantly played more mainstream national bands and not any psychedelic garage style rock.
Good thing we also had WKNR (Keener13) a station that played a great variety and didn't shy away from the pre-progressive rock sound, Electric Prunes, Question Mark & the Mysterians besides this track of the Unrelated Segments.
A great song and to my ears not sounding as dated as some of the others, pop/rock music had a phenomenal run from 1960's-1990's with the 1968-1978 range being exceptional.
I had the local pressing on this not the HBR one, wished I had my 45rpm collection still.......

I was 14, living just outside Detroit when this HIT. They were from Taylor, MI, 3 miles from me. Oldest band member was 15! Lead singer 14! GREAT RAW ENERGY BAND! They're original label (SVR) could NOT come up with funding to press records fast enough so they leased it to Hanna-Barbera (of cartoon fame). But during the press run Hanna-Barbera made a corporate decision to leave the "independent" record producing market & concentrate ONLY on releasing the soundtracks to their cartoons. This destroyed groups that had pressing contracts, like The Unrelated Segments, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Hogs, The Tidal Waves and many others. GREAT group though, that had (after the H/B fiasco) two great tunes picked up by Liberty but poorly promoted. Liberty was into Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Jan & Dean & "pop rock"-- NOT GARAGE. Too bad. Graduation & Vietnam service destroyed the group.

Holy crap...ADOLESCENTS doing this great music?!!?? I never knew much about this group - this was one of those "Keener 13" songs, I don't think it was on CKLW. I've always loved this, and I was a bit older than you, Robert (19 that August). I would have never correctly guessed how old the band members were. Yes I grew up just the other side of Ypsi which made WKNR a little rough to hear at night, but they simulcast on FM in their earlier days and at least I could hear that well.

@bobthompson8053

I watched these guys on tv on Robin Seymour's Swinging Time when this came out. To me this was hypnotic.

I've been looking for this song forever dude. Holly shit.

@luvhatpunk9453

Bass player is all over that fret board towards the end of the song around 1:58, like a mad genius with forty fingers, crazy man! Thnx Emiliano!

@WocklessGamingforAnimeMoms

I fucking love this song. It sounds like if Pylon,Aus Pairs,The Misfits, and The Last Resort were the same band and it's somehow from The 60s.

@user-ci3gu1xj5n

Even today, I Can't work out how the bass player did that. Amazing band. Thank you!

@ruthdixon7807

some 60 years later this remains the best garage record to be produced in detroit.
