Who You Are
Unspoken Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know that look you're givin' like you got something to prove. '
Cause I have walked for miles and miles in that same pair of shoes.
You refuse forgiveness like it's something to be earned.
But sometimes pain's the only way that we can learn.
You can never fall too hard, so fast, so far that you can't get back when you lost where you are.
It's never too late so bad, so much that you can't change who you are.
Ooohhh, Ooohhh, you can change who you are.
Ooohhh, ooohhh.
You believe in freedom, but you don't know how to choose.
You gotta step out of your feelings that you're so afraid to lose.
And everyday you put your feet on the floor you gotta walk through the door, it's never gonna be easy.
But it's all worth fighting for.
You can never fall too hard, so fast, so far that you can't get back when you lost where you are.
It's never too late so bad, so much that you can't change who you are.
Ooohhh, Ooohhh, you can change who you are.
Ooohhh, ooohhh.
So let the ashes fall wherever they land, come back from wherever you've been.
To the foot of the cross, to the feet of Jesus.
The feet of Jesus.
You can never fall too hard, so fast, so far that you can't get back when your lost where you are.
It's never too late so bad, so much that you can't change.
You can never fall too hard, so fast, so far that you can't get back when your lost where you are.
It's never too late, so bad, so much that you can't change.
At the foot of the cross you change who you are.

At the foot of the cross you change who you are.
Ooohhh, Ooohhh, you can change Ooohhh, ooohhh.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Unspoken's "Who You Are" tell a story of a person who is struggling with self-acceptance and forgiveness. The first few lines talk about someone who seems to have something to prove, possibly to themselves or to others. The singer then says that they have also walked in these shoes, suggesting that they can relate to the struggles of the listener. The second verse describes a person who believes in freedom but doesn't know how to choose. They are afraid of losing something, which prevents them from taking risks and moving forward in life. The chorus repeats the message that no matter how far someone falls or how much they've messed up, they can always change who they are. The bridge encourages the listener to come back to the foot of the cross, to the feet of Jesus, where they can find acceptance and forgiveness.

Overall, the song is a message of hope for anyone who feels trapped by their past or their present circumstances. It acknowledges that change is difficult and that there will be obstacles to overcome, but it also affirms that it's never too late to make a change and that forgiveness and redemption are always possible.

I know that look you're giving,
Like you've got something to prove
'Cause I have walked for miles and miles
In that same pair of shoes
You refuse forgiveness
Like it's something to be earned
Sometimes pain's the only way that we can learn
You can never fall too hard,
So fast, so far
That you can't get back
When you're lost
Where you are is never too late,
So bad, so much
That you can't change
Who you are, ooo-oooh
You can change who you are, ooo-oooh
You believe in freedom,
But you don't know how to choose
You gotta step out of your feelings
That you're so afraid to lose
And everyday
You put your feet on the floor, you gotta walk through the door
It's never gonna be easy
But it's all worth fighting for
You can never fall too hard,
So fast, so far
That you can't get back
When you're lost
Where you are is never too late,
So bad, so much
That you can't change
Who you are, ooo-oooh
You can change who you are, ooo-oooh
So let the ashes fall wherever they land
Come back from wherever you've been
To the foot of the cross
To the feet of Jesus,
The feet of Jesus
You can never fall too hard,
So fast, so far
That you can't get back
When you're lost
Where you are is never too late,
So bad, so much
That you can't change
You can never fall too hard,
So fast, so far
That you can't get back
When you're lost
Where you are is never too late,
So bad, so much
That you can't change
At the foot of the cross
You can change, yeah
Who you are
At the foot of the cross
You can change, yeah
(Who you are)
You can change who you are, ooo-oooh
You can change, ooo-oooh

I heard this song for the first time as I was driving home from the hospital to visit my dad for the first time, it randomly came on the radio.  My dad had just gone into cardiac arrest while running (and had to be resuscitated 9 times).  I had seen him for the first time, in the ICU connected to a respirator and unable to speak or fully even think.  My strong dad who I never thought I would see in an infantile state.   He was in shape and led a healthy lifestyle, and because of that I can thank God he beat the 2% odds and made a full recovery.  But during that drive home, I didn't know what was going to happen, and when this song came on I burst into tears.  It is amazing when this kind of stuff happens.

By the way, two years later my dad is now able to continue his passion again, running (under Dr's supervision).   I even just did my first 10k with him.  Thank you God :)

God bless you and your dad, you have many more blessings to come my sister. Never give up hope and never give up god. Love you, peace.

That's a powerful testimony.
I myself came back to Lord when I saw my mom on the death bed because of a cardiac arrest. Then, I had gone away from God, but asked, "Why God?...Why us?"
Only after a few years after that when i came back to Jesus, I began to say to my mom, "Maybe what God did was for all our good when seen from His perspective."

We are never too far. God loves us so much and seeks after us and sends us messages through so many means. It's up to us to swallow our pride and yes "I surrender",
which is very hard! And only Holy Spirit can help us accept it :)
