Save Me
Unwritten Law Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Had a bad day, don't talk to me, gonna ride this out.
My little black heart breaks apart, with your big mouth.
I'm sick of my sickness. Don't touch me, you'll get this.
I'm useless, lazy, perverted, and you hate me

You can't save me, you can't change me.
Well I'm waiting for my wake-up call, and everything, everything's my fault.
Went to the doctor, and I asked her to make this stop.
Got medication, a new addiction, fuckin' thanks a lot!
Had to relapse, I'm outta rehab, ruins everything.
So point your finger, at the singer, he's in the pharmacy.

You can't save me, you can't change me.
Well I'm waiting for my wake up call, and everything's my fault.
You can't save me, you can't blame me.
Well I'm waiting here to take a fall,
And everything, and everything's my fault.

And I'm a death threat, haven't slept yet,
Baby why the wake up call?
I'm a bad boy, tell the tabloids, everything's my fault!

Whoa whoa yeah, write it write it!
Whoa whoa everything's my fault, everything's my fault.

I went to heaven, but couldn't get in, for what I have done.
I said 'Please take me!', he said 'You're crazy, you had too much fun.'

You can't save me, you can't change me.
Well I'm waiting for my wake up call, and everything's my fault.
You can't save me, you can't blame me.

Well I'm waiting here to take a fall,
And everything, and everything's my fault.

Overall Meaning

"Save Me" by Unwritten Law is a song about a person with addiction and self-destructive tendencies who feels completely trapped and helpless despite efforts of others to help. The first verse starts with an expression of frustration about their day and how they intend to deal with it. It is clear that the person is in a state of mental distress and severe depression. They feel that their heart is breaking because of the words people say to them. They consider themselves useless and perverted and feel that others hate them. The person is in so much pain that they do not want to be touched, and they do not believe anyone can save or change them.

The second verse starts with the person seeking medical help to stop their suffering. The doctor prescribes medication, which becomes yet another addiction. The person relapses and continues to spiral out of control. They are aware that their behavior is not acceptable and that others will blame them for it. They are waiting for what they call a "wake-up call" - perhaps a moment of clarity that will make them realize that everything they are doing is their fault.

In the final verse, the person contemplates their mortality and wonders if they will go to heaven. They feel as if they have done too much wrong to be accepted, even in the afterlife. The chorus repeats the central idea that nobody can save or change them, and everything that is wrong is their fault. The person has resigned themselves to this state of being and feels powerless to get out of it.

the best articulated song about systematic self destruction, depression, and self-loathing. I relate so entirely and completely.
