Any Given Sunday
Upon a Burning Body Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This is a crash course for all the fortunate ones
Now there will be no searching for reason so kiss your ass goodbye
Step down, I'm fucking sick of it all
We can fight our way out of the light, we can climb out of hell one inch at a time
This is your new resolution
A last chance to redeem your treason
You glory days die
All the fake smiles hiding the truth inside you and all your wretched ways
Now will pay the ultimate price
Scum of the earth
You will suffer eternal demise
Feel these words burn as they come one by one straight into your black heart
Someday a real rail will come and wash the scum from the streets
Theres no handouts when your whole world is drowning in a river of greed
So how the fuck does it feel?
How does it feel to be cast out and all alone?
The more you take the less you give
Its all because in the end you're all the same
Wheres your fortune and fame?
Watch it fading away
Wheres your fortune and fame?
Its fading away
Scum of the earth, you will suffer eternal demise
To the highest mountain I will climb just to throw you off and say goodbye one last time.
The lyrics to Upon a Burning Body's song "Any Given Sunday" seem to be a scathing critique of those who are privileged and successful but lack integrity and a sense of morality. The lines, "This is a crash course for all the fortunate ones/Now there will be no searching for reason so kiss your ass goodbye" suggest that the song is directed at those who have had it easy in life and don't understand the struggles of others. The singer is tired of these people and steps down to confront them. The chorus, "We can fight our way out of the light, we can climb out of hell one inch at a time/This is your new resolution/A last chance to redeem your treason" seems to be a call to action, a challenge to these successful people to change their ways.
The lyrics also reference the idea of fame and fortune, asking "Wheres your fortune and fame?/Watch it fading away." This could suggest that the singer believes that the wealthy and privileged are not truly happy, and that their wealth and fame is ultimately ephemeral. The final lines, "Scum of the earth, you will suffer eternal demise/To the highest mountain I will climb just to throw you off and say goodbye one last time" suggest that the singer despises these people and wants to see them metaphorically "thrown off a mountain."
Overall, "Any Given Sunday" seems to be a condemnation of those who are successful but lack integrity, and a call to action for those people to change their ways before it's too late.

Agreed! Saw them for $15 and was literally 3 feet from the stage back in April, but it'll be worth the $50 to see them again, even if it's a stadium show. Love these guys, can't wait to see them live again!
