Independent
Uppermost Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

/* Sample by Ben Howard, from "Keep your head up" */
And I gave my eyes to the boredom, still the seabed wouldn't let me in,
And I tried my best to embrace the darkness in which I swim.
All I was searchin' for was me.
Ooh all I was searchin' for was me.

Keep your head up
Keep your mind set
Keep your heart strong

To embrace the depth

Overall Meaning

of the unknown.

The lyrics in Uppermost's song Independent are deep and introspective. The line "And I gave my eyes to the boredom" suggests a feeling of hopelessness or boredom that the singer has experienced. However, despite their attempts to escape this feeling, the "seabed wouldn't let [them] in," indicating a sense that they are trapped in their current emotional state. The next line "And I tried my best to embrace the darkness in which I swim" suggests that the singer is not willing to give up and is willing to face their problems head-on. Through this struggle, the singer realizes that all they were searching for was themselves, indicating a process of self-discovery.

The chorus then comes in, encouraging the listener to "Keep your head up, Keep your mind set, Keep your heart strong, To embrace the depth of the unknown." This suggests that even in times of difficulty, it is important to stay strong and be brave enough to confront the unknown. The use of "depth of the unknown" suggests that there is much to discover, and by facing it with a strong heart and mindset, one can uncover new and meaningful aspects of oneself.

In overall, Uppermost's Independent is a powerful song about self-discovery and the courage needed to face the unknown. It encourages listeners to keep their heads high and their hearts strong, even when faced with difficulties.

I listened to this music before I moved. It was a very difficult time leaving my friends. This music brings back strong emotions of nostalgia and sadness. It is a beautiful sadness though, and I will treasure it.

I discovered Uppermost and heard this song just weeks before the world closed over covid, so every time I hear it, I'm reminded of the early days of the pandemic. It's interesting how certain songs freeze a time in your life so that every time you hear it, you're taken back to that magical moment, for better or for worse.
