Rohan Heath (born 19 July 1964) was the driving force behind the group. He played keyboards, but crucially wrote and produced their songs. Heath had formerly worked with Yargo and A Guy Called Gerald. Urban Cookie Collective’s original vocalist was Diane Charlemagne (b - 22 February 1964, d - 28 October 2015), who co-wrote some of their tracks. The other main members were Simon Bertall (b - 17 October 1967) and Peter Samson (bongos) (b - 15 May, 1968). Guest rappers took part from time to time to create an eclectic mix in the studio.
Heath had learned classical piano as a child, and decided on a career in music after abandoning a PhD at Vermont University. After a tour of Japan supporting the Happy Mondays, he left A Guy Called Gerald to release “Hardcore Uproar” under the title of ‘Together‘, which made number 12 in the UK singles chart in August 1990. After a brief stint with Eek A Mouse, he created the Urban Cookie Collective in 1992.
They achieved a major breakthrough in 1993 with “The Key The Secret”, which peaked at #2 in the UK, #3 in Australia and #5 in Germany. It was originally a track written at home by Heath, in a soul and hip hop vein. After a subsequent re-mix provoked a massive club response it was picked up by the Pulse 8 record label. The follow-up release was “Feels Like Heaven“ which was also very successful. But, slowly diminishing returns met subsequent releases.

Urban Cookie Collective’s song, “The Key, The Secret” is a classic from the 90s with a positive message about taking control of one's life by unlocking the potential that is often hidden within us. The song’s chorus, “I’ve got the key, I’ve got the secret, I’ve got the key to another way,” suggests taking the initiative to make changes and overcome obstacles, to unlock a brighter future.
The key and the secret in the song can be interpreted as a metaphor for discovering one's hidden potential and unlocking it. The singer is proclaiming that they possess the knowledge needed to reveal a new path in life. This path, whether it be a new job, a new love interest or simply a new perspective, is only accessible once someone unlocks the door that holds it back.
Overall, the song conveys a message of hope and positivity. It reminds listeners that there is always the potential for positive change and that one should never give up on achieving their goals.

My favourite song ever but it's been released more times than Gary Glitter. There was the 1993 original, then a 1996 remix, then this 2004 remix and to top that it was remixed again in 2005 when it got to No.31. Time for their other massive hit, Feels Like Heaven to be remixed now

This was filmed in a hideous warehouse in London which had been used the night before as a fetish club and had NOT been cleaned in any way before we were all there for a whole day (it needed some serious disinfecting...!). I was on set at 6am and in costume (and moustache) by 7am - and I didn't start shooting my section until 6pm... "April Stevens" who appears at 0'24" is the vocalist (the "hot dog guy" is the other member of the band) - she was waiting almost as long to shoot her section and I think she was almost in tears by the time she was wrapped on set (and... as you can see... she's not exactly "featured"). I believe I got paid £200 including overtime. Amazing times. Derek Diggler.
