Lady in Black
Uriah Heep Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She came to me one morning
One lonely Sunday morning
Her long hair flowing in the mid-winter wind
I know not how she found me
For in darkness I was walking
And destruction lay around me
From a fight I could not win
Ah, ah, ah

She asked me name my foe then
I said the need within some men
To fight and kill their brothers without thought of men or God
And I begged her give me horses
To trample down my enemies
So eager was my passion to devour this waste of life
Ah, ah, ah

But she would not think of battle that
Reduces men to animals
So easy to begin and yet impossible to end
For she the mother of all men
Had counciled me so wisely that
I feared to walk alone again
And asked if she would stay
Ah, ah, ah

Oh, lady, lend your hand, I cried
Oh, let me rest here at your side
Have faith and trust in me, she said and filled my heart with life
There is no strength in numbers
I've no such misconceptions
But when you need me be assured I won't be far away
Ah, ah, ah

Thus having spoke she turned away
And though I found no words to say
I stood and watched until I saw her black cloak disappear
My labor is no easier
But now I know I'm not alone
I find new heart each time I think upon that windy day
And if one day she comes to you
Drink deeply from her words so wise

Take courage from her as your prize and say hello for me
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Uriah Heep's song Lady In Black follow the interaction between the singer and a mysterious woman who helps him overcome his violent tendencies. The woman comes to the singer on a lonely Sunday morning and asks him to name his foe. He replies that it is the need within some men to fight and kill their brothers without thought of men or God. The singer begs the woman to give him horses so that he can trample down his enemies, but she refuses to think of battle that reduces men to animals. Instead, she advises him not to walk alone and fills his heart with life.

The woman is described as the mother of all men, and she counsels the singer so wisely that he finds new heart each time he thinks upon that windy day. Thus, he asks the listener that if the woman ever comes to them, they should drink deeply from her words so wise and take courage from her as your prize, saying hello for him. The song seems to be a meditation on the theme of violence and the redeeming power of love and wisdom.

🍀 Lady in Black Lyrics:

Ela veio até mim uma manhã
Uma solitária manhã de domingo
Seu longo cabelo fluindo no vento do meio do inverno
não sei como ela me encontrou
Pois na escuridão eu estava andando
E a destruição está ao meu redor
De uma luta que não pude vencer

ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

Ela me perguntou o nome do meu inimigo então
eu disse a necessidade dentro de alguns homens
Para lutar e matar seus irmãos
Sem pensar em amor ou Deus
E eu implorei a ela me dê cavalos
Para atropelar meus inimigos
Tão ansiosa era minha paixão
Para devorar este desperdício de vida

ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

Mas ela não pensaria em batalha que
Reduz os homens a animais
Tão fácil de começar
E ainda impossível de terminar
Para ela a mãe de todos os homens
Então me aconselhou tão sabiamente
Eu temia andar sozinho novamente
E perguntou se ela iria ficar

Oh senhora empreste sua mão eu chorei
E deixe-me descansar aqui ao seu lado
Tenha fé e confie em mim, ela disse
E encheu meu coração de vida

Não há força nos números
Não tenha esse equívoco
Mas quando você precisar de mim
Tenha certeza de que não estarei longe

ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

Uriah Heep is criminally underrated and it's criminal that they're not in the Hall of Fame!

@linxj6

Always thought that too.
Maybe it's because the freaks that nominate just don't know what good music is.
They all have deserved that for a long time and got nothing.

@Veraelful

He's in the Hall of Fame. In the eternal Hall of Fame of our hearts!

@provektor2350

Если в Зале Славы Мадонна😷 , то Хиппам там нечего делать )))

@Daniel_Antonio_Arellano782

Bands like Uriah Heep and Grand Funk Railroad, should be in the HOF

@kennygr8ify

@Daniel Arellano, I agree with you on that, and I just gave up on the HoF, it's turning out to be a joke!

Back in 1977 I was in the Army stationed in Germany. While on leave visiting my cousin, she told me I HAD to check out Uriah Heep. So, as soon as I returned to Germany, I found the next concert available near me and went to see Uriah Heep for the first time. I fell in love. Although I loved all the songs, this one really grabbed me and has not let me go since. I went on to collect all the albums and saw them in concert 3 more times (2 more in Germany and once in San Diego after I got out of the Army).

I think Lady in Black was re-released in Germany in 1977 (Originally released in 1970) and was a huge hit there going #1 for many weeks.
