Pachinko
Urusei Yatsura Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Down we go, who lives inside this home?
Golden chords, plastic shades and a broken doll
Stop the show, i want to let you know
There's no point, no goal
Just a cracked hollow sound rattling on the radio

Look at you, on the floor
Don't get up, you'll feel much better
I don't care, i'm insured
I'm alright, i'll never settle
I'm not tired, i'm just bored
Hold the line, i'll never settle
Never never, never never
Never never, never settle

Screen dissolves, to paracetamol
Razor blades, pubic hair in the mayonnaise
Plot update, cut from fridge to the microwave
In your sleep, in your dreams
It's the bleep bleep bleep of the baby in the cash machine

Look at you, on the floor
Don't get up, you'll feel much better
I don't care, i'm insured
I'm alright, i'll never settle
I'm not tired, i'm just bored
Hold the line, i'll never settle
Never never, never never
Never never, never settle

Hey hey hey, it's ok
We got a rush, got a crush coming on today

Hey hey hey it's ok
My minds a pachinko gone astray

Overall Meaning

The song "Pachinko" by Urusei Yatsura is a commentary on the mundanity and monotony of everyday life, the sense of being trapped in a cycle of work and consumption, without any true purpose or direction. The song begins with the line "Down we go, who lives inside this home?" suggesting a descent into a world of artificiality and decay. The "golden cords" and "plastic shades" represent the material trappings of modern life, while the "broken doll" hints at the failure of these possessions to bring true happiness or fulfillment. The idea of a "cracked hollow sound rattling on the radio" is a metaphor for the emptiness and meaninglessness of modern culture.

The lyrics go on to describe a series of surreal and disturbing images, such as "pubic hair in the mayonnaise" and the "bleep bleep bleep of the baby in the cash machine" which further emphasize the absurdity and ugliness of modern life. The chorus, with its repeated refrain of "I'll never settle" suggests a desire to escape from this drudgery and find something more meaningful and satisfying, though it is uncertain whether this is truly possible.

As much as I love the updated look, there’s something about the 80s goofiness that you just can’t replicate!

@Rudoku1

They looked like they could've fit in with Peanuts characters in that OP, and I loved it.

@mukamasa

It has a more cartoony look so their expressions are more exaggerated, while the panchinko remake tries to hard to keep the characters consistent sacrificing expressiveness.

@mrtesticlease4638

its the looseness of the animation. going off model was part of the appeal. in todays day, even if its animated digitally, just giving less of a shit trying to make the animation look better will make it look better, ironically
