USURA darían los primeros pasos allá por 1989, cuando Ana Béjar, Alfonso Pozo y Miguel Dávila comienzan a dar conciertos durante aproximadamente año y medio, acompañados por una caja de ritmos. Se grabaron, como era normal, varias maquetas y el resultado era ya tan alentador que ganan el concurso “Circuitos de la comunidad de Madrid” en 1990. Howard Toshman se incorpora a la banda como segundo guitarrista, un músico que ya había demostrado de lo que era capaz en bandas como los WATERBOYS y THE BELIEVERS. Un año después, y tras haber actuado ampliamente por Madrid, Howard regresa a Inglaterra. Pero nuevamente se incorporaría otro miembro: Gary Ellis, asumiendo la tarea de sacudir la batería acústica; inglés de origen, había formado parte de bandas británicas tales como CEMENT GARDEN y LA CUCINA. Así las cosas el grupo resulta finalista del concurso “Certamen de Madrid 91”, y poco después la banda pasa a ser sexteto con la incorporación de Ramón Moreira (segunda guitarra) y José Luis Zabala (bajo), pasando Miguel a los teclados.

Tras grabar una nueva maqueta de cuatro canciones debutan con un Ep de cinco temas para Elefant Records. Los elogios llueven por todas partes y no en vano la revista Rock de Lux elige “Lovesick” octava mejor canción de 1992. El single sonaría en multitud de programas especializados por toda España, e incluso atraen la atención de los medios europeos.

A finales del 92 embarcan en una de las giras más importantes que ha conocido la música española, el proyecto “Noise pop 92”: cuatro bandas (USURA, EL REGALO DE SILVIA, PENELOPE TRIP y BACH IS DEAD) imprescindibles para la reactivación de la música alternativa de nuestro país. El concierto de clausura de la gira, ya en el 93, fue grabado y retransmitido íntegramente por Radio Nacional de España. El “Diario Pop” considera el concierto de Barcelona como el mejor del año, así como Rock de Lux, tanto para los lectores como para la revista. Además son considerados como el mejor grupo independiente para la sala madrileña “Siroco”, y son finalistas en el concurso “Villa de Bilbao”. Music Business International, una de las revistas inglesas más prestigiosas, no duda en calificar a USURA como la mejor banda independiente de nuestro país. Más adelante incluyen un tema en el recopilatorio del sello inglés Fluff Records, así como en otros alemanes, españoles e incluso japoneses.

Su segundo single, adelanto de lo que sería su primer Lp, no se hizo esperar: “Maze” y “Vals” (inédita) serían los dos nuevos temas que pondrían sobre el tapete la incuestionable calidad de la banda. Y “Hake Romana”, el álbum, llegó al fin lleno de fuerza. El disco es una sabrosa pieza de 14 temas en los que se da rienda suelta a la imaginación. Tiempos medios, acelerados, la voz de Ana siempre en un primer plano, los preciosos arreglos, los cambios de ritmo y por supuesto las melodías.

Las críticas aparecidas en la prensa española (ABC, Ruta 66, El País, RDL, Spiral... la lista es interminable) fueron extraordinariamente positivas: RDL lo eligió como el décimo mejor disco del año (séptimo para los lectores), Spiral el tercero, etc. En paises como Inglaterra o Francia sonó en multitud de radios y el grupo apareció no sólo en fanzines, sino en revistas de gran prestigio.

Un gran número de actuaciones han seguido al disco: salas repletas en las que no cabía un alma y todo para ver en directo a una de nuestras grandes bandas. Lo más destacable, sin duda, el hecho de que telonearan a YO LA TENGO en un concierto inolvidable, como ya habían hecho con LUSH.

Tras una última actuación (en formato acústico) dentro del Festival “Sigue la Pista” el 25 de Febrero de 1994 en Valencia, USURA se separan.

Tras una temporada en Londres, Alfonso y Ana vuelven a España para formar un nuevo grupo: ORLANDO. Otros componentes de USURA (Miguel y Jose Luis) crean otra banda: VENAS PLUTÓN.
