Hear me, see me

Welcome to soundview projects
Bronx new york, 10473

Intersection action ribs touching
New gutter smacks replacing the whole dutchman
Loose mamis fucking, they definite land mines
Dudes with no right hustle throwing gang signs
Empty in the webbings broke and underpaid
Fighting federal cases with legal aids
The unlit stage tonight performing lime desires to eat
Can get you in a 8 by 5, the corner's younger
I smell feel touch and taste they hunger
Next in line to rep these street signs to they blunder
Under, wiping tears from his eyes facing the felony
These niggas wanna be pistol pete -without the penalty
His last words, promise me this much in death
Don't my boy live to retrace my steps

Minne stay safe move quiet and get it
If you encounter opposition get a inch from they face with it

Later amigo, digest the day to end discreetly
Sex money and boss
My ties to hear me see me
True villain
Face covered, driving gloves
Commit by my lonely when push comes to shove
They say that grown men lay on they prey
Took shorts in the street
Came back and made up for that with that white sheet
Revenge is best served cold
Get it the same way you give it
This ain't fear I just need to get away with it
Son stop over here(?), you looking at me like I'm lame
But I'm looking at y'all like y'all call this the drug game
Grand child hosing sims
Put the heroin in queens
Put pops freeman on in the early seventies
I sat in rooms with money machines
Drugs sitting 3 feet off of the floor
Cover the smell of the raw
Chess moves like barksdale, my connects untimely
King henry from 12th street flooded the bronx in the 90's
03 scene mvp and one accord
Boss makes decision paper wins awards

See me, hear me

Welcome to brooklyn, new york city 11206
Roosevelt projects, wild rose water the plant

Son you know what it is
From the moment that you come over the bridge
And if you don't ride with me
I'm gonna show you some shit
I'ma show you where my niggas stay sure on the mix
I'ma show you where the pain and the poetry is
Ghetto young'ns spend a lot of time alone in the crib
Bet on the screen, walls and posters of big
Hustlers getting dough sitting low on the 6
Blazing up the ambro glow over they wrist
Hop in the game knowing the risk
Still down to load up they clip
Gamblers with hopes of rolling the trip
But when you hear head crack there ain't no rolling again
Snatch the dice and everything you want is going it in
This how it happens, good people, bad habits, diabetics, crack addicts
Asthmatics
Searching for the truth leaping through the holy tablet
The bible, the q uran, or the ten crack commandments
Speak on it god, what's today's mathematics
The five day forecast, the dow jones average
The price of beer, cigarettes, bread, milk and pampers
Life is a test and we all got the answer
The streets keep calling its hard not answer
And on my government-my attribute-my all
So it's only natural I holla black and respond
Brooklyn stand up and make 'em all sit down
We do not fuck around

That's what it is (all day)
That's what is niggas (official, official)
That's how it is niggas
Bx, bk live all day

Get with it
Grown man business

Overall Meaning

The song "Fresh" by V-Def is a vivid and poetic description of life in the streets of New York City. The lyrics are an invitation to the listener to join the rapper in a journey through different neighborhoods (Soundview Projects in the Bronx and Roosevelt Projects in Brooklyn) and witness the grittiness, danger, and complexity of life in the ghetto. The song highlights various issues concerning urban poverty, including street violence, drug addiction, gang membership, and limited opportunities for social mobility. The lyrics also contain references to several historical and cultural icons of African-American community, such as Pistol Pete (a notorious gangster from the '80s), Biggie Smalls (a celebrated rapper from Brooklyn), and the Ten Crack Commandments (a poem by the late rapper Notorious B.I.G).

The opening lines of the song ("Hear me, see me/Welcome to Soundview Projects/Bronx New York, 10473") set the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The rapper wants to be heard and seen, to share his perspective on what it means to grow up and make a living in the projects. V-Def employs different narrative techniques, such as metaphors, allusions, and word plays, to convey a message that is both personal and universal. While the lyrics reflect V-Def's own experiences and aspirations, they also resonate with the struggles of millions of people who live in similar circumstances around the world.

Hear me, see me
Attention, I demand to be recognized and acknowledged

Welcome to soundview projects Bronx new york, 10473
This is Soundview projects in Bronx, NY, where I'm from

Intersection action ribs touching New gutter smacks replacing the whole dutchman Loose mamis fucking, they definite land mines Dudes with no right hustle throwing gang signs
At the intersection, people are crowded and physically touching each other. The condition of the area is poor and the people around are unruly. Young women in the area pose a threat as they are promiscuous and untrustworthy. Men who do not have the right mindset to make a living are perpetuating gang-related gestures.

Empty in the webbings broke and underpaid Fighting federal cases with legal aids
The community is poor and lacks resources. People cannot afford to hire a lawyer, but they want justice and are still fighting their cases in court.

The unlit stage tonight performing lime desires to eat Can get you in a 8 by 5, the corner's younger I smell feel touch and taste they hunger Next in line to rep these street signs to they blunder Under, wiping tears from his eyes facing the felony These niggas wanna be pistol pete -without the penalty His last words, promise me this much in death Don't my boy live to retrace my steps
People on the streets are hungry and desperate to make money, even though it could lead them to prison. Someone who is about to commit a crime knows that they may end up in jail, but the hunger for money, power, and pride is too strong. Meanwhile, someone is mourning their friend who recently died in pursuit of these things, and they want their ancestors to forgive them and their friends to learn from their mistakes.

Minne stay safe move quiet and get it If you encounter opposition get a inch from they face with it
Minne (a friend, perhaps) should work hard to stay safe and out of trouble. If they have to confront someone, they should act assertively and stand up for themselves without backing down.

Later amigo, digest the day to end discreetly Sex money and boss My ties to hear me see me True villain Face covered, driving gloves Commit by my lonely when push comes to shove
I'm saying goodbye to a friend and urging them to reflect on the day before ending it peacefully. My life is driven by sex, money, and power. Despite the mask, I am a true villain. I am willing to commit crimes alone when necessary to succeed.

They say that grown men lay on they prey Took shorts in the street Came back and made up for that with that white sheet
Some say that successful men rest on their laurels, but in reality, they have had to overcome adversity to get to where they are. They have had moments of failure but have since recovered and made up for it in a big way.

Revenge is best served cold Get it the same way you give it This ain't fear I just need to get away with it
Retribution is most satisfying when it is exacted with a calm, calculated plan. I only plan to retaliate in the same way someone has come after me, out of a sense of justice, not fear.

Son stop over here(?), you looking at me like I'm lame But I'm looking at y'all like y'all call this the drug game Grand child hosing sims Put the heroin in queens Put pops freeman on in the early seventies I sat in rooms with money machines Drugs sitting 3 feet off of the floor Cover the smell of the raw Chess moves like barksdale, my connects untimely King henry from 12th street flooded the bronx in the 90's 03 scene mvp and one accord Boss makes decision paper wins awards
I ask why somebody is looking at me with disrespect after calling me out for participating in drug deals. My grandfather used to grow plants in the garden, while my father trafficked drugs in the 70s. I have had first-hand experiences with drug cartels and have learned how to outsmart my competitors. I have become successful because I make good decisions.

See me, hear me Welcome to brooklyn, new york city 11206 Roosevelt projects, wild rose water the plant
I demand that people take notice of me and listen to what I have to say. This is Brooklyn, NY, where the Roosevelt Projects are located, and the neighborhood is ready for change and growth.

Son you know what it is From the moment that you come over the bridge And if you don't ride with me I'm gonna show you some shit I'ma show you where my niggas stay sure on the mix I'ma show you where the pain and the poetry is
You are going to learn about life in the city if you come to my neighborhood. You need to be with me, or I will show you some tough realities. But I will also show you where you can find interesting, thought-provoking experiences, such as in the art and poetry of the area.

Ghetto young'ns spend a lot of time alone in the crib Bet on the screen, walls and posters of big Hustlers getting dough sitting low on the 6 Blazing up the ambro glow over they wrist Hop in the game knowing the risk Still down to load up they clip Gamblers with hopes of rolling the trip But when you hear head crack there ain't no rolling again Snatch the dice and everything you want is going it in This how it happens, good people, bad habits, diabetics, crack addicts Asthmatics Searching for the truth leaping through the holy tablet The bible, the q uran, or the ten crack commandments Speak on it god, what's today's mathematics The five day forecast, the dow jones average The price of beer, cigarettes, bread, milk and pampers Life is a test and we all got the answer The streets keep calling its hard not answer And on my government-my attribute-my all So it's only natural I holla black and respond Brooklyn stand up and make 'em all sit down We do not fuck around
Children in the ghetto spend many hours at home by themselves, relying on media and their imaginations for entertainment. Meanwhile, drug dealers are making a lot of money while not drawing too much attention to themselves. Gamblers hope to strike it big, but because of the risks, people can lose big instead. Despite this, people search for answers in various texts, using religion and other teachings to try to make sense of their lives. We are always being tested by life, but we know how to handle it. The call of the streets is irresistibly strong, but I am loyal to my community and to myself. People in Brooklyn are strong and resilient and will fight until the end.

That's what it is (all day) That's what is niggas (official, official) That's how it is niggas Bx, bk live all day Get with it Grown man business
This is what it is; this is how we live. We're a tight-knit community living in Bronx and Brooklyn. This is not child's play.
