Slacks
VAllEY Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Slack pulls through.
I search for you.
Drinkin' stride.
We'll stumble tonight.

I've packed my things.
Darling, you've pulled my strings.
Wipe my eyes,
And you out of sight.

You don't hold my heart,
Like you run in dark.
You don't hold my heart,
Like you fell from heights.

Slack pulls through.
I search for you.
Drinkin' stride.
We'll stumble tonight.

Frightened by (?)
(Yeah you face some time in front of me)
Pressure that breaks my spine.
(And find me with my shoulders down)
Fading light,
(I will carry you through hallways (?))
Drag us behind.
(And find a way to lay you down)

You don't hold my heart,
Like you run in dark.
You don't hold my heart,
Like you fell from heights.

(1, 2, 3, 4)

All I was lookin' for was,
Catchin' some time but,
You don't want to be a friend.

You don't hold my heart, (ahhhh)
Like you run in dark. (ahhhh)
You don't hold my heart, (ahhh)
Like you fell from heights. (ahhhh)

(Ahhhhh)

Slack pulls through.
I search for you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Valley’s song “Slacks” seems to be about a tainted relationship that has ended. The main vocalist is most likely referring to a former lover or a person whom they had strong feelings for. The song starts off with the line “Slack pulls through” which could be interpreted as a metaphorical reference to time, as if time itself is having an impact on the situation, and is relentlessly moving forward. The vocalist is shown to be searching for the person they lost, but is found to be drinking and stumbling through the night; it is possible that this search is a futile effort.

In the second verse, the vocalist declares that they have packed their things and the lover in question has “pulled my strings.” The use of the word darling suggests fondness, hence we can assume that the relationship was once strong or had potential. But despite this, the vocalist is ready to wipe the tears away and the lover out of sight. The chorus repeats the lines “You don’t hold my heart/Like you run in dark/You don’t hold my heart/Like you fell from heights,” which shows that the person in question no longer has the same level of emotional hold or intensity over the vocalist.

In the next verse, the vocalist talks about being frightened by something but is ready to face the pressures that may come their way. They also mention the fading light and how they will carry their lover through hallways, suggesting a certain commitment or obligation they feel towards the person they lost. The strange syntax of the last line, "drag us behind," adds to the song's ambiguity but could signify the emotional baggage of the relationship or the weight of moving on.
