I was surfing through Johnny
Tillotson videos,
listening and commenting, when this video popped
up. Difficult to imagine this song
being interpreted any
better than this.
The original version was recorded by Hank Williams on March 20, 1948
and released the
following year, reaching #2 on the
country charts.
According to historian Collin
Escott, a guitarist
named Claude Boone bought the
song for $25 from
James Arthur Pritchett, a local
musician and drunk who performed under the stage name of
of Arthur Q. Smith.
When the song was first introduced to Hank, he said it was the prettiest
song he had ever
heard.(For all we
know, J. A. Pritchett never actually wrote the
song, but acquired it from someone else, who had also acquired it from
someone else, and on down the
line!
All we know for
sure is "it is what
it is."....an immortal song!
With gratitude to
BeMisty for posting another
"winner." (By the way, the B-side of this 45rpm single
was "I Just Told Mama Goodbye."
That title alone is
enough to tear-up
one's emotional
system without
even having heard
the song!😢😢😢)

FANTASTIC OLD COUNTRY...BEAUTIFUL AS ALWAYS

@sonnydave8551

Vernon Oxford is a true classic country singer! He never got much play in the USA. Considered "too country". Imo, that is a great compliment.

@frankchilds9848

Vernon has an amazing feel for songs written by or associated with Hank Williams. He doesn't just cover the song..he emotes it in his way as Hank emotes in his way. It is uncanny yet beautiful. My thanks to you Bianca again!
