Bottoms up my bokkie
Here's to the moon
I let you blow me into orbit
With your favours
So tell me how can you tune me
Nooit when I tune you, it's cool
I never dream about the way you could have been
True romance and a party, well, take me away
Come jive with me in the nightclubs, I'll pay for both of us
Tell me how can you tune me
It's bad when I tune you, it's okay
I trap down the street with a bag in my hand
High on Big Jacks and beer and a tune up here and one or two rand
Whistling a tune I composed on my own
Tell me how can you tune me
It's blind when I tune you, it's grand
I'll keep on falling in love with the shadows again and again and again
And polish my boots with the beer that I spill on my shoes
And strum away my sorrows in six string weekends
Tell me how can you tune me
You scheme it's the greens when I tune you it's the blues
Tell me how can you tune me
Nooit when I tune you, it's cool
The song "How Can You Tune Me Nooit When I Tune You It's Cool" by Valiant Swart is a playful and catchy tune that explores the dynamics of a relationship where one person constantly feels they are being ignored or undervalued. The opening lines suggest a sense of availability and willingness to make time for the other person, with the singer being "always merry" and encouraging a toast to the moon. However, there is also a sense of being used or taken for granted, as the other person is able to "blow me into orbit with your favours."
The chorus of the song poses the question "how can you tune me nooit when I tune you, it's cool?" This line is repeated throughout the song and can be interpreted in a few different ways. On the surface, it seems to suggest that the singer is able to "tune" or cater to the other person's needs and desires, whereas the other person is unable or unwilling to reciprocate. However, the use of the word "tune" also implies a kind of musical harmony or synchronization, suggesting that the singer is in tune with the other person, but the other person is out of tune with them.
The rest of the lyrics explore different aspects of the relationship, with the singer expressing a desire for "true romance and a party" and offering to pay for both of them to go out to nightclubs. There is also a sense of rebellion and defiance, with the singer drinking and whistling their own tune as they strut down the street. Ultimately, despite feeling ignored and undervalued, the singer seems to be comfortable with their role in the relationship and content to continue falling in love with the shadows and strumming away their sorrows on the guitar.
