Cousins

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You found a sweater on the ocean floor
They're gonna find it if you didn't close the door.
You and this model sit outside the side
In a house on a street they wouldn't park on at night.

Dad was a risk taker.
His was a shoe maker.
You greatest hits 2006, little list maker.
Caught in the melody, you wait in the car.
You were born with ten fingers and you're gonna use them all.

Interest in girls as I discovered myself
If your odd-life was greater
You'll be toastin' my health
If an interest in culture,
You should be lining the walls.
When your birth right is interest
You could just accrue it all.

Me and my cousins and you and your cousins
It's a line that is always running.
Me and my cousins, and you and your cousins,
I can feel it coming

You could turn your back on the bitter world

Me and my cousins and you and your cousins
It's a line that is always running.
Me and my cousins, and you and your cousins,
I can feel it coming

Me and my cousins and you and your cousins
It's a line that is always running.

Me and my cousins, and you and your cousins,
I can feel it coming

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song 'Cousins' by Vampire Weekend are quite cryptic and seemingly nonsensical at first glance. However, with some analysis and interpretation, it becomes clear that the song is discussing the idea of family and heritage, as well as the pressures of society and culture upon individuals.

The first stanza seems to describe a scenario where someone has lost a sweater in the ocean and may face consequences for not adequately protecting it. This can metaphorically represent the loss or disregard for something significant, like familial traditions or artifacts. The line "In a house on a street they wouldn't park on at night" suggests that there may be some danger or insecurity surrounding the location, which could symbolize a lack of comfort or stability in one's familial heritage.

The second stanza speaks about the potential influences on one's identity and interests, such as the role of one's father and the impact of popular culture. The line "Caught in the melody, you wait in the car" could be interpreted as feeling trapped or stuck, waiting for something to happen or change. The following lines suggest that people are born with potential and their individual interests, but may also face pressure to conform to societal expectations.

The repeated lines throughout the song, "Me and my cousins and you and your cousins, it's a line that is always running" could represent the continuity of family relationships and heritage. The final line, "You could turn your back on the bitter world" implies a sense of resignation or defeat in the face of societal pressures.

Overall, 'Cousins' speaks to the complexities of identity and heritage, and how individuals must balance societal expectations with their true selves.

LYRICS
I know the reason why you think you gotta leave
Promises of future glory don't make a case for me
I did my best and all the rest is hidden by the clouds
I can't carry you forever, but I can hold you now

Leaving on your wedding day, all calm and dressed in white
All I'll keep's the memory of one last crooked night
The pews are getting filled up, the organ's playing loud
I can't carry you forever, but I can hold you now
Alright

God, yu tekem laef blong mi
Mi mi givim nao long yu
Bak mi giv evride
Blong leftemap nem blong yu

I know the reason why you think I oughta stay
Funny how you're telling me on my wedding day
Crying in those rumpled sheets like someone's ‘bout to die
You just watch your mouth when talking ‘bout the father of the bride

Why's your heart grown heavy, boy, when things were feeling light?
Turning this June morning into some dark judgment night
This ain't the end of nothing much, it's just another round
I can't carry you forever, but I can hold you now

God, yu tekem laef blong mi
Mi mi givim nao long yu
Bak mi giv evride
Blong leftemap nem blong yu

Alright

I think this hymn, written by Frances R. Havergal in 1874, is what the pidgen version is based on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARrUGH2u_Uo

Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.

Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee;
Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.

Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee;
Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.

Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise;
Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine;
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.

Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store;
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.

@bamadave83

I get chills just thinking about it

@shovons

The chorus is a sample from the 1999 world war 2 film "The Thin Red Line".
It is sung by the Soloman Islanders in a mix of "pidjin English and creole" and is called "God Yu Tekem Laef Blong Mi": "God, take my life and let it be".

Based on an old English hymn.

So this is the type of music I study and the funniest thing is that the original German then Anglican hymns that a lot of Melanesian peoples apply their own vocal pedagogy to are completely boring and drab. Then here’s a group of people that have been colonized, devastated, uprooted, and otherwise have dealt with just the worst that we can have thrown at them along with so many other peoples and made the most beautiful music and versions of their at times forced new religions hymns using their own musical traditions. A lot of people would not call the sound produced pretty based on our own conception of what that means but regardless it’s beautiful and there are many many songs to listen to if you like this type of music that hold the same beauty.
