And I admit I have been lax
In double-screening what I say
It wasn't funny anyway
I stand corrected
No one cares when you are wrong
To act like that when we should be
In perfect harmony
I stand corrected
Lord knows I haven't tried
I'll take my stand
One last time
Forget the protocol
I'll take your hand
Right in mine
I stand corrected
The song "I Stand Corrected" by Vampire Weekend is a reflective piece on personal accountability and honesty. The lyrics themselves showcase the realization that the singer has been careless with the truth, and is now owning up to their shortcomings. The lines "You've been checking on my facts, and I admit I have been lax" highlight the singer's acknowledgement that they haven't been truthful, or at least thorough, in their communication. However, they're not trying to make excuses for their actions as seen in the lines "It wasn't funny anyway, I stand corrected". Instead, they're owning up to their mistakes and hoping to improve the situation.
The second verse of the song reveals the consequences of the singer's actions. The line "No one cares when you are wrong, but I've been at this far too long" shows that being wrong or untruthful isn't acceptable for someone who's been in a situation for a long time. The singer feels a sense of shame for their conduct and understands that corrective measures are necessary. As the song progresses, the singer accepts their wrongdoings and tries to make amends by taking responsibility for their actions.
