Spring Snow
Vampire Weekend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The snow fell last night
Your flight couldn't leave
Come back to the bed
Let's take this reprieve

It felt like the end
The end's been delayed
You're here in my arms
So what should I say?

The words of a song
The prayers that we pray
The lock on the door
Won't keep them away

The snow slows them down
If just for a a day
But here comes the sun
Those toxic old rays

Trains start to move
Bells start to ring
The seasons we had
Don't mean anything

Trains start to move
Bells start to ring

The seasons we had
Don't mean anything

Overall Meaning

"Spring Snow" by Vampire Weekend is a song that captures a sense of temporary relief and respite amidst the chaos of life. The lyrics depict a situation where the singer's plans have been disrupted due to snowfall, causing a flight delay. However, instead of being frustrated, they invite their partner back to bed, to enjoy this unexpected moment of pause together.

The opening lines, "The snow fell last night, Your flight couldn't leave, Come back to the bed, Let's take this reprieve," set the tone for the song. It's a simple and intimate scene, where the snow becomes a catalyst for them to be together, away from the world's demands and disruptions. It hints at the idea that sometimes unexpected obstacles can lead to unexpected moments of connection and happiness.

As the song progresses, the lyrics touch upon the fleeting nature of these moments. The singer acknowledges that although they are currently in each other's arms, they are aware that the end is near, but it has been temporarily delayed. The line, "The snow slows them down, If just for a day, But here comes the sun, Those toxic old rays," reflects the bittersweet reality that despite the temporary respite, the harsh realities of life will eventually intrude again.

The lyrics also allude to the power of music, prayer, and even physical barriers like locks to ward off the troubles and complications of life. However, the singer seems to acknowledge that all these efforts are temporary and ultimately futile. The lines, "The words of a song, The prayers that we pray, The lock on the door, Won't keep them away," suggest that despite their best efforts to protect their sanctuary, external influences will always find a way to disrupt it.

In the final lines of the song, the repetition of "Trains start to move, Bells start to ring, The seasons we had, Don't mean anything" emphasizes the transient nature of their relationship and the ephemeral nature of the moment they are experiencing. It suggests that even though they may have had wonderful memories together, those memories don't hold much weight or significance anymore. Life moves on relentlessly, and the seasons, like the relationship, come and go without leaving a lasting impact.

Overall, "Spring Snow" captures the delicate balance between finding solace in fleeting moments of togetherness and the inevitable passage of time.

Even the instrumental of this song literally sounds like the combination of the soundtrack to a late November snowfall, and the spring thaw. It's the kind of mind-bender that you can't think too much about.

Love that ripple dribbly gargly sound at the very beginning so much. This song is my favorite Vampire Weekend melody

@ronster369

The most under-appreciated song on Father Of The Bride. That ripple dribbly gargly sound is musical heaven. My favorite too on an album without a single filler in the bunch. FOTB will live on far beyond it's expiration date. If we have to wait another 6 years for their next release just put me out of my misery now.

@kaia799

one of my top 5 fav vampire weekend songs🥲

@kaia799

i could listen to it all dayyyy

@firstnamelastname364

It's singing with the 'autotune' effect applied really heavily. Even though his music is the polar opposite to Vampire Weekend, Kanye West surprisingly uses autotune for a very similar sound in a lot of his songs!

This is actually beautiful. Reminds me of 2019, when everything was amazing. ❤️❤️❤️
