THIS LIFE
Vampire Weekend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, I know pain is as natural as the rain
I just thought it didn't rain in California
Baby, I know love isn't what I thought it was
'Cause I've never known a love like this before ya

Baby, I know dreams tend to crumble at extremes
I just thought our dream would last a little bit longer
There's a time when every man draws a line down in the sand
We're surviving, we're still living, are we stronger?

You've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on me
I've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on you
You've been cheatin' on me
But I've been cheatin' through this life
And all its suffering
Oh Christ
Am I good for nothing?

Baby, I know hate is always waiting at the gate
I just thought we'd lock the gate when we left in the morning
When I was told that war is how we landed on these shores
I just thought the drums of war beat louder warnings

You've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on me
I've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on you
You've been cheatin' on me
But I've been cheatin' through this life
(Cheatin' on, cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on you)
And all its suffering (cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' through)
Oh Christ
(Cheatin' on, cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on you)
Am I good for nothing? (cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' through)

Baby, I know death probably hasn't happened yet
'Cause I don't remember living life before this
And, darling, our disease is the same one as the trees
Unaware that they've been living in a forest

You've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on me
I've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on you
You've been cheatin' on me
But I've been cheatin' through this life
(You've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on you)
And all its suffering (you've been cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' through)
Oh Christ (you've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on you)
Am I good for nothing? (You've been cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' through)

This life (you've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on you)
And all its suffering (you've been cheatin' on me)
(I've been cheatin' through)
Oh Christ (you've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on me)

(I've been cheatin' on, cheatin' on you)
Am I good for nothing?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "This Life" by Vampire Weekend deal with the complexities and contradictions of human relationships, both with ourselves and with others. The song starts with an acknowledgement that pain and love are natural but unexpected, with the singer noting that they thought California was immune to rain. This is quickly followed by the realization that love is not what they expected it to be. These sentiments are echoed throughout the song, with the singer grappling with the impermanence of dreams and the constant threat of hatred and war.

The song takes an interesting turn as the singer confesses that they themselves have been cheating, asking if they're "good for nothing." This line suggests that the singer is engaging in self-destructive behavior, perhaps as a means of punishing themselves for the pain and uncertainty that comes with love and life in general. The final verse adds another element to the song's meditation on life and death, with the singer suggesting that they don't remember anything before their current existence and that both humans and nature can be unaware of their own existence.

This is all set to a poppy, upbeat tune that belies the song's darker undertones. This contrast adds to the overall sense of confusion and uncertainty that the song presents, as the listener is left to wonder whether the characters in the song can ever find the answers they seek.

"Darlin' our disease is the same one as the trees, unaware that they've been livin' in a forest" is probably my favorite line off this album

@apullcan

Mine has to be “baby, I know death probably hasn’t happened yet, because I don’t remember living life before this”

@aunthaumv3711

What does that mean though?

@tashfiqchoudhury

"And I was told that war was how we landed on these shores, I just thought the drums of war beat louder warnings" hit me hard

@emmastjohn8298

@@aunthaumv3711 I think it means that we're all hurting, even the earth, but we are connected somewhat because of that

@aunthaumv3711

@@emmastjohn8298 i see. It could be. Shame that he wouldnt explain the real meaning behind any of the lyrics

"I'm a loner, but I'm kind of a people person, too". Yeah, that really is good. Great song & video. The words are sad, but the music is uplifting. I'm 76, and I keep on playing this song over & over. I think this song appeals to all age groups.

@johnberesford9906
