Crawl
VanVelzen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On a way home, down the same road,
I can feel it again, the floor beneath both of us.
Is trembling now, because the words are shaking
Telling me now, doesn't change anything
You're telling me how, I should have done something else.

But how can I be guilty over crime, you started.
Stop right there, 'cause you can do better.

I'm not gonna crawl, it's not what I want
I'm not afraid to stand, where the others turn and ran
If you have to cry, I'll make your tears mine.
You're the one I want, but I'm never gonna crawl.

Standing outside, thinking how lucky I was
Hitting my stride, being there with you
But now it's like your emotion, wants to claim something
Gone so wrong, 'cause you can do better

I'm not gonna crawl, it's not what I want
I'm not afraid to stand, where the others turn and ran
If you have to cry, I'll make your tears mine.
You're the one I want, but I'm never gonna crawl.

I will make that we stay, no I'm gonna change it
You can leave me astray, from your heart
somewhere deep in your soul, there's a wait
to get out of all. You hurt, and make this matter.

I'm not gonna crawl, it's not what I want
I'm not afraid to stand, where the others turn and ran

If you have to cry, I'll make your tears mine.
I'm never gonna crawl.

Overall Meaning

The first verse sets the scene of a couple driving home together down the same road after an argument or difficult conversation. The singer can feel the tension and unease between them and the floor feels like it's shaking as they try to figure things out. The other person is blaming the singer for not doing something differently, however, the singer knows that they cannot be held responsible for a crime/start that someone else committed. The other person is trying to guilt them into feeling responsible, but the singer is not going to give in to that manipulation. They urge the other person to stop and reassess, because they know that everyone has the capacity to do better.

The second verse describes the singer standing outside, reflecting on how lucky they felt to be with the other person. The singer was on a roll, feeling good about where the relationship was headed. However, now it seems like the other person's emotions are taking control and creating unnecessary drama. The singer again reminds the other person that they can do better than this and that they refuse to crawl or beg for love. They are not afraid to stand, even when others might run away. They are committed to the relationship, even when it is difficult, and they will not let the other person break them down.

The chorus repeats the message that the singer is not going to crawl, no matter how hard things get. They are not afraid of standing up for themselves and for what they want. They empathize with the other person, offering to share in their tears, but they will not let themselves be treated unfairly. Finally, the bridge asserts that the singer is determined to stay and fix things, even when the other person tries to push them away. They know that the other person is hurting and that they can work together to resolve the matter.
