Dance The Night Away
Van Halen / David Lee Roth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have you seen her?
So fine and pretty
Fooled me with her style and ease
And I feel her
From across the room
Yes, it's love in the third degree

Ooh, baby, baby
Won'tcha turn your head my way?
Ooh, baby, baby
Ah, come on, take a chance
You're old enough to

Dance the night away
Oh
Come on, baby, dance the night away

A live wire, barely a beginner
But just watch that lady go
She's on fire, 'cause dancin' gets her higher than
Anything else she knows

Ooh, baby, baby
Won'tcha turn your head my way?
Ooh, baby, baby
Well, don't skip romance, 'cause
You're old enough to

Dance the night away
Oh
Come on, baby, dance the night away

Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh yeah

Dance the night away (hey, hey, yeah)
Dance, dance, dance the night away
Oh, come on, baby (dance the night away) hey, hey yeah
Dance, dance, dance the night away
Uh, come on, baby, baby

Dance the night away, ooh, ooh, yeah
Dance, dance, dance the night away ah, ha ow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Van Halen's "Dance The Night Away" suggest a man's infatuation with a woman he has just met. The opening line, "Have you seen her?" portrays his amazement at the sight of the beautiful lady. He calls her "fine and pretty," using colorful language to describe her looks. She has caught his attention with her style and charm, displacing him to a place of admiration. When he sees her across the room, he feels immediate attraction and seems to be captivated by her beauty. He talks about "love in the third degree," a term used to describe the highest level of love intensity, which is closely linked to obsession.

The track goes on to exult the beauty for her dancing skills. The woman is experienced on the dance floor, with the man describing her as an "on-fire" dancer. Her dancing ability makes her high, and she becomes electric, caught up in the moment. The singer tries to woo her with his flirtatious yet subtle lyrics, asking her to turn her head his way and give him a chance. He wants her to acknowledge him, implying that she enjoys a good dance, and he is willing to be the one to take her by the hand and Dance The Night Away.

Some who are younger may not fully appreciate what a badass front man Dave was in his younger days, audiences loved him.

@canadianintheukbrian

Exactly I seen the Diver Down Tour there is live bootlegs on the Tube , what people don't understand back in those days the amps were crank my ears were shot for two weeks after that show, Diamond Dave was amazing great to hear these old songs again ,

@Ice-Fall

Funny you say that, I saw Van Valen in the early 80's. I remember.

@stuofthepots

Agree totally, I went to see him live many times and he really was brilliant. Monsters of Rock 1988 was a stand out

@dwaynejessome1728

maybe, but, he's the furthest thing from that now, and really needs to stop it already. This vocal embarrassingly bad even after it's obviously been auto tuned.

@canadianintheukbrian

@@dwaynejessome1728 many of them are, Paul Stanley said it best in those days the singers had to scream over the amps, seeing Van Halen in 82 I remember how loud it was , it's understandable Roth's voice is not what it is, but I get with Roth is doing , people forget he was part of a band that revolutionized metal at that time and influence many many bands, I think it sounds great, a rawness to it , your right his voice is further from what ti was , you want to hear bad listen to Vince Neil now that's painful,

I remember being 17, skipping school to stand on line for tickets to see their concert to support their first album, there'd never been a front man like Diamond Dave before, he was amazing one of a kind. I'm glad he's now covering some of that early material. For me, Van Halen stopped being Van Halen when Dave left.
