Brown-Eyed Girl
Van Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, where did we go?
Days when the rains came
Down in the hollow
Playin' a new game
Laughing and a running hey, hey
Skipping and a jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our hearts a thumpin' and you
My brown-eyed girl
You, my brown-eyed girl

Whatever happened
To Tuesday and so slow?
Going down the old mine
With a transistor radio
Standing in the sunlight laughing
Hiding behind a rainbow's wall
Slipping and sliding
All along the waterfall, with you
My brown-eyed girl
You, my brown-eyed girl

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
Just like that
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da

So hard to find my way
Now that I'm all on my own
I saw you just the other day
My, how you have grown
Cast my memory back there, Lord
Sometimes I'm overcome thinking 'bout
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium with you
My brown-eyed girl
You, my brown-eyed girl

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da
(Bit by bit, by bit, by bit, by bit, by bit)
(Sha la la la la la la, la te da, la te da

Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da
(La te da, da da da da da da da da)

Overall Meaning

Van Morrison's hit song "Brown Eyed Girl" tells the story of a young man reminiscing about his days with his former lover. The first verse describes the good old days when the two of them would play "a new game" in the hollow, skipping and running around in the misty morning fog with their hearts "a thumpin'." He affectionately calls her his "brown-eyed girl," a term of endearment that is repeated throughout the song.

The second verse is even more nostalgic, as the singer tries to recall an even earlier time when they used to spend their Tuesdays together, going down the old mine with a transistor radio. Together they laughed in the sunlight, hid behind a rainbow's wall, and slipped and slid along the waterfall.

The final verse is the most poignant, as the singer confesses it's so hard to find his way now that he's all on his own. He sees his brown-eyed girl again, and it hits him how much she has grown since the last time they were together. This flood of memories makes him think about the times they made love in the green grass behind the stadium, and it's a bittersweet and wistful ode to lost love.

"And every cat in the twilight's gray/ Every possible cat."

The tortoiseshell cat,
She sits on the mat,
As gay as a sunflower she;
In orange and black you see her wink,
And her waistcoat’s white and her nose is pink,
And her eyes are as green as the sea.
But all is vanity, all the way;
Twilight’s coming and close of day,
And every cat in the twilight’s gray,
Every possible cat.

The tortoiseshell cat,
She is smooth and fat,
And we call her Josephine,
Because she weareth upon her back
This coat of colours, this raven black,
This red of tangerine;
But all is vanity, all the way;
Twilight follows the brightest day,
And every cat in the twilight’s gray,
Every possible cat.

My husband used to sing this song to me all the time when we were dating. Then alot after we were married too. Every year on my birthday. He passed away three months ago and my birthday is tomorrow. It will be the first birthday I won't hear him sing this song to me . I was 16 when he first started and I'll be 54 tomorrow. I keep listening to it now just to remember him. I miss him so much.
