Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, writing their 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career, starting with the album Astral Weeks.
Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.
He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.
Evening in June

When the night holds the secrets
Of the sleepy lagoon
I'm contemplating moonlight
On the water
When I'm walking with you
On an evening in June
It can get so sentimental
When I'm thinking of you
And I can't think of anything
Except being with you
When the summer is through
On an evening in June
On an evening in June
Well it lifts me up
When I'm talking to you
On an evening in June
When the flowers are in bloom
And the sky is so blue
Well there's so many things
Taking place
That it's hard to keep up with it all
Keep your eye on the ball
And to make the right call
When we're longing for fall
On this evening in June
On an evening in June
Well it lifts me up
When I'm talking to you
On an evening in June
When the flowers are in bloom
And the sky is so blue
Well there's so many things taking place
That it's hard to keep up with it all
Keep your eye on the ball
And to make the right call
When we're longing for fall
On this evening in June
By the sleepy lagoon
On an evening in June
By the light of the moon
By the sleepy lagoon
On an evening in June
On an evening in June
By the sleepy lagoon
By the light of the moon
By the sleepy lagoon
On an evening in June
Van Morrison’s “Evening in June” is a romantic tribute to the power of love and the enchantment of a summer evening spent in the company of a lover. The song’s opening lines are imbued with mystique and intrigue. The moonlight sets the stage for the song’s contemplative mood and hints at the secrets of the night. The sleepy lagoon, shrouded in darkness, becomes the perfect setting for reflection, introspection, and heightened emotions. The singer is walking with his lover, and as they stroll by the water’s edge, he feels uplifted by her presence. The beauty of the summer evening, coupled with the intensity of his feelings for her, makes the moment indelible and unforgettable.
In the song’s chorus, Morrison takes us deeper into his thoughts, evoking nostalgia for the past, and looking ahead to future possibilities. The memories of his current summer romance are utterly romantic, and he envisions an idyllic future with his beloved, hoping to make more happy memories together. The couple is so engrossed in each other’s company that they don’t see the world moving around them, making it hard to keep up with all the changes taking place. However, the night’s enchantment keeps them grounded and focused on what is essential - the present moment.
