Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, writing their 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career, starting with the album Astral Weeks.
Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.
He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.
Freaky If You Got This Far

If you got this far.
You came a long way,
But you're freaky
And we can do something with you.
If you got this far
You should be freaky,
You should be freaky.
We'll put you in a jar
And sell you
As a freak.
We think you're freaky,
Two, two, three.
The lyrics of Van Morrison’s song, “Freaky If You Got This Far” expresses the idea that those who are unique or out of the norm are valuable and interesting. The repeated phrase “freaky, freaky” highlights this point, while the line “if you got this far” suggests that reaching a certain point in life or a certain level of individuality is an achievement to be celebrated. When the line “we can do something with you” is combined with “we think you’re freaky,” it reinforces the idea that those who deviate from the norm have a place in the world and can make an impact.
The chorus serves as both encouragement and caution. It notes, “If you got this far/ You should be freaky, you should be freaky,” implying that those who have achieved a level of uniqueness should be proud of it. However, the line “We’ll put you in a jar and sell you as a freak” warns that society may view those who are different as objects to be marketed as entertainment. The song seems to suggest that those who are unconventional have a place in society, but it also acknowledges the challenges that come with being different.
