He plays a variety of instruments, including the guitar, harmonica, keyboards, drums, and saxophone. Featuring his characteristic growl - a unique mix of folk, blues, Irish, scat, and Celtic influences - Morrison is widely considered one of the most unusual and influential vocalists in the history of rock and roll. He has received numerous music awards during his career, including six Grammy Awards (1996–2007); inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (January 1993), the Songwriters Hall of Fame (June 2003), and the Irish Music Hall of Fame (September 1999); and a Brit Award (February 1994).

Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, writing their 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career, starting with the album Astral Weeks.

Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.

He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.

In the early 70's Van was living in Marin County, California, across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. At that time the album Moondance had been out but Van was still poking around looking for an angle. I got to see him at Keystone Corner, the best jazz and blues bar in SF, right next to a police station (Keystone Cops). I was about 20 when I saw him play that spot. Within the same time frame I saw him play at the main folk club, in the Tenderloin, seating about 70. In the 80's I saw him play the Greek Theater in Berkeley with the string quartet. But it was something to have seen him play the little bars and theater. As anyone who performs will tall you, it's far easier to play a large venue, raised up above the crowd of 50,000 or whateve,r as the people are physically far away and are just part of mass. But in the little places, the interaction between performer and audience is more intimate. Van would twist and writhe with each sentence of his lyric in those small places. You witnessed someone wrestling between the need to act out the pain and love and having a private dignity. Why bother exposing yourself to ridicule if things go wrong? If the singing is weak or the band is bad or the audience is inaccessible? Singer song writers are the closest thing we have in the WEst to priests of poetry - of psycho/emotional truths.
What a soul Van has that drives him into the spotlight of needing to feel the act of telling the truth. To live the truth. One thing I've learned in my search for the experience of truth, I'm 68, is it is better to tell your truth to the world and accept the consequences. Telling truth, or representing it in the world, will entangle you in conflict over and over. Sometimes you'll win passage and other times you won't and will have sacrificed dignity and pride. But if being true removes you from a group, or a lover, or a job or any situation, it will lead to better things for you. It's of paramount importance to be true and accept what doing that brings about. This is how you progress in life. You can't count the cost of benefits lost. You must always focus on the authenticity won by acting out your truth.

My dad loves Vans Hymns to the Silence album. I bought him it for his birthday when it came out . When we were kids he'd play Astral Weeks in the car all the time, he's a big fan of the great man's works. The songs on this album always bring back happy memories for me. I am a public school teacher and this song could be an anthem for teachers. Catherine Scarsdale I hope you get too. I saw him in Glasgow 2001 and just shut my eyes and wow the music just washed over me. I'll hopefully see him again but if I don't it's cool the music is the soundtrack to our lives. :-)

There are not many people I wish to see live in concert. I would have liked to see Dylan about twenty or thirty years ago. I missed an opportunity to see Lou Reed at a local venue many years ago. When Van came around while performing Astral Weeks the tickects went very quickly. Even though I think his music of late is recycling old themes I still rank him very high on my list of all-time favorite musicians. If I am a low mood I'll put on some Van Morrison (Tupolo Honey, Astral Weeks, Into the Mystic, etc) and it buoys me up which is what good music should do. I hate listening to depressing music.

I saw him at a concert at the University of Maryland auditorium back in 1973. He was great. The only problem was that when the concert was over. He could not leave fast enough. He did not stick around.

Saw him in Miami a few weeks ago. Absolutely no personality until he starts singing and playing-then pure magic. He starts on time and does no encores but every song felt new and alive. Made me dive back into the catalogue and appreciate all his work.
