Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, writing their 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career, starting with the album Astral Weeks.
Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.
He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.

See through your laughing eyes
The smile you smile is you and I
See through your laughing eyes
Oh, baby
In the whirlpool of them, I
Can be in paradise
And ever and a day with you
Oh yes, I will
I'd go roamin' in the gloamin'
And ever and a day with you
Oh baby
Sit between the stars and say
That's my point of view
Oh yes
I yi, yi, yi, love you
I yi, yi, yi yi, love you
In the purple heather
On a hillside mountain fog we'll stray
Oh yeah
In the purple heather
On a hillside mountain fog we'll stray
Oh yeah
An' chase the colored grass
Around us in the same old way
I yi, yi, yi, yi love you, baby
I yi, yi, yi, yi love you, oh yeah.
The lyrics to Van Morrison's song "I Love You (The Smile You Smile)" convey the powerful emotions a person experiences when they are deeply in love with another person. The first verse describes the smile of the person that the singer loves as being a reflection of themselves. The laughter in their eyes is a mirror of the joy that the singer feels when they are with this person. The power of this connection is so strong that the singer describes it as being like paradise.
The second verse continues with the theme of being completely devoted to the person that the singer loves. The phrase "roaming in the gloamin'" suggests a sense of wanderlust and adventure, a desire to explore the world together. The idea of sitting between the stars and sharing a point of view reinforces the idea of a deep connection between two people who are completely in sync with each other.
The final verse takes the listener on a journey through the misty hills and purple heather of the Scottish Highlands. The idea of chasing the colored grass around them is a metaphor for the joy and spontaneity of being in love. The repetition of "I yi, yi, yi, yi love you" emphasizes the depth of feeling and the intensity of the emotions being expressed.
Overall, "I Love You (The Smile You Smile)" is a beautiful and poetic expression of love that captures the magic and mystery of falling deeply in love.
