If You and I Could Be as Two
Van Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spoken: Was on a Sunday
And the autumn leaves were on the ground
I kicked my heart
When I saw you standing there in your dress of blue
The storm was over, my ship sailed through
Sings:
What is this feeling, a-what can I do?
If you an' I, could be relieved
To walk and talk and be deceived
I'd give my all and all
And more I would do, oh yeah
If darlin', only you and I could be as two

If we could dream and by our dreams
Sew this wicked world up at the seams
I'd give my life and more I would do
If darlin', only you and I could be as two

Spoken:
And baby, do you remember
All the good times we had together?
A-walkin' through the park
A-baby then, then we could sing

Give ya' all my money
Ev'rything in the world that I had
You told me, "That don't mean a thing"

If still in darkness we could run
Together, there in that mornin' sun
I'd give my all, my life and ev'rything to you
Whoa-yeah
If darlin', only you and I could be as two

Could be as two
Could be as two
FADES-

Could be as two
Baby

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, "Was on a Sunday, and the autumn leaves were on the ground, I kicked my heart when I saw you standing there in your dress of blue", set the stage for the nostalgic and reflective tone of the rest of the song. The singer sees someone that they used to be with and is filled with emotion. He is confused by his feelings and doesn't know what to do. The chorus, "If you and I could be relieved, to walk and talk and be deceived, I'd give my all and all, and more I would do, oh yeah, if darlin', only you and I could be as two", is a wistful wish for a time when things were different, and the relationship was still alive. The singer longs to be with this person again but knows that it's not possible.

Throughout the song, the theme of longing for the past is prevalent, and the chorus repeats the wish that the two of them could go back to a time when they were genuinely happy together. The lines "If we could dream and buy our dreams, sew this wicked world up at the seams, I'd give my life and more I would do if darlin', only you and I could be as two" emphasize the desire for a Utopian world where everything is perfect, and nothing can tear them apart again. The song ends with the lines "If still in darkness we could run, together, there in that morning sun, I'd give my all, my life and everything, to you, whoa-yeah, if darlin', only you and I could be as two". The singer still holds onto the hope that one day they could be reunited, even though it's unlikely.
