Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, writing their 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career, starting with the album Astral Weeks.
Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.
He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.

After a summer shower when I saw you standin'
In the garden in the garden wet with rain
You wiped the teardrops from your eye in sorrow
As we watched the petals fall down to the ground
And as I sat beside you I felt the
Great sadness that day in the garden
And then one day you came back home
You were a creature all in rapture
You had the key to your soul
And you did open that day you came back to the garden
The olden summer breeze was blowin' on your face
The light of God was shinin' on your countenance divine
And you were a violet color as you
Sat beside your father and your mother in the garden
The summer breeze was blowin' on your face
Within your violet you treasure your summery words
And as the shiver from my neck down to my spine
Ignited me in daylight and nature in the garden
And you went into a trance
Your childlike vision became so fine
And we heard the bells inside the church
We loved so much
And felt the presence of the youth of
Eternal summers in the garden
And as it touched your cheeks so lightly
Born again you were and blushed
And we touched each other lightly
And we felt the presence of the Christ
Within in our hearts
In the garden
And I turned to you and I said
No guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the father in the garden
Listen no guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the Father and the
Son and the Holy Ghost
In the garden, wet with rain
No guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature and the Father
And the Son and the Holy Ghost
In the garden, in the garden, wet with rain
No guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the Father in the garden
The opening lines set the mood of the song, Van Morrison sets an authentic and melancholic tone of the scenery from the very beginning, as he describes "the streets always wet with rain" and standing "in the garden in the garden wet with rain" after a summer shower. The first verse then describes a moment of shared sadness, as Van Morrison and someone else watch "the petals fall down to the ground". It's not clear what they are mourning, but it is a memory that they now share, and it sets the foundation for the rest of the song.
The second verse emphasizes the transformative power of nature and faith, as "one day, you came back home" and had "the key to your soul". The imagery in this verse is vivid, as Van Morrison describes the sunlight on this person's "countenance divine" and their violet-colored aura. The rest of the verse emphasizes the presence of God and the youth, as they feel "the presence of the youth of eternal summers in the garden". The third verse proceeds to describe a powerful moment of epiphany, as this person enters a trance and experiences a rebirth.
The final verse is where Van Morrison lays out the central philosophy of the song. He tells the person that they don't need a guru, method, or teacher and that they can find a spiritual connection with each other and nature in the garden. He echoes this sentiment in the final refrain, as he repeats "No guru, no method, no teacher, just you and I and nature and the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost in the garden, in the garden, wet with rain". This final statement drives home the idea that spirituality can be found in a moment of shared human connection and nature.
