In the Midnight
Van Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the lonely, dead of midnight
In the dimness, of the twilight
By the streetlight, by the lamplight
I'll be around

In the sunlight, in the daylight
And I'm workin', on the insight
And I'm tryin' to keep, my game uptight
I'll be around

And your memory, I heard this lonely lonely music once
And your memory, has been haunting me ever since

When I'm tryin', tryin' to come down
In my world, my room keeps spinning round
And I'm tryin' to get my feet, back on the ground
You come around

In my memory, I heard the lonely, lonely music once
In my memory, its been haunting me ever since

In the lonely, dead of midnight
In the dimness of the twilight
If you meet me, by the lamplight
I'll be around

And I'm tryin' for the come down
And my room, keeps spinning round and round

And I'm tryin' to get my feet right back on the ground
You come around

Overall Meaning

Van Morrison's "In the Midnight" is a poignant song about yearning for someone and feeling their memory haunting you in the dead of night. The lyrics are a combination of vivid imagery and introspective musings. In the first verse, Morrison sings about being around, both in the light of day and the darkness of night. He's trying to keep his game "uptight" which could refer to both his personal life and musical career. The second verse talks about how the memory of the person he's longing for is haunting him. He expresses that no matter how much he tries to come down from this feeling, his room keeps spinning around, and he can’t seem to get his feet solidly on the ground. The final verse returns to the beginning, reiterating that he'll still be around, no matter the time of day or night, hoping she will meet him by the lamplight.

The contrast between light and dark is a central theme of the song. Morrison suggests that although he's present during the daylight, it’s when the streetlights and lamplights come on that he feels most alive, most connected. With each repetition of the chorus, Morrison is affirming that he is still around, and that despite the memory of the woman he is yearning for, he’s always present and waiting for her.

I was in the middle of responding to you & the PC cut out?
You're not satan's spawn~~TFF~~guess we all get to be who we are~If I did not know better, I would think it was one of my brother's. (I have not seen or spoken to him in years) Same stuff, same words, just Atheism? (But the same words)  We all get to do our dance~I just dig where you're at.

Have a great weekend, GODDESS.

Since I have to post this as a response here~Diane, I'll stick with "bite me" but I so love what you wrote back to me.  HUGE SMILES~~~~ DON'T ever apologize for who you are.
  Shine woman, SHINE~
Like I said, I choose not to engage with this shit.  I'll be your cheerleader~~~~I dig your gmail site & youtube site too.

I feel as if I would be feeding the dragon if I engaged with this person & yes I have followed what has been written in response to your 'WELL CHOSEN' words & responses.  You rock, Diane. & you are very polite.  Me, I just choose to not engage with what I see as insanity if at all & hold ALL IN LIGHT, even the ass holes, since we all have one.  You have a HUGE one after you, sad to say.

Sparkles,  ~~off to play my guitar........I am very much into music~it brought us together!

Joie`

I tried to send this to your email~~it would not go through.  ?

I just heard this song for the first time last night. It brought me to tears rolling down my face. Only one other time in my life a song has touched me so deep. Thank You Mr Morrison for writing such a beautiful song.

@MissDistarr60

I'm glad you found your way to this video.  This is a slice of music at it's absolute best!!!  He has many others just as beautiful.  His music is among the many bands that made up the soundtrack of my youth and I will forever be grateful to have grown up during the 60's and 70's.  The music back then helped to form the person I am today.  It was such a different time back then as was the music.  Take care and keep on listening to this master artist.
