Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.

He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.

I adore Van Morrison. ❤
He, his music i(which imho is one and the same) is embedded in my very soul. Whenever I need to re-charge, find my center, need inspiration... so many things
"Van the Man" ...his music, poetry, prose is almost always who I turn to.
What a storyteller! His lyrics, music are captivating. Empowering. Emotional. Healing & Fun! ( think "The Best of Van Morrison") with: "Cleaning Windows" & " Bright Side of the Road" " Gloria"!
And then there's the "other side of the scale" with, "Poets Champion Compose"...."Celtic Excavation"...WOW! The most gorgeous instrumental ever.
And, "The Garden" just takes me away, I flow into it. I've actually choreographed dance, to much of his music throughout the years.
His music, lyrics takes us to such ethereal places, for example, "Hymns to the Silence," I just move with the music. I dance, to merge with the music and we (the music & the dancing) become as one. I hope I'm making sense lol
It's also a form of meditation for me.
Quite a beautiful experience of expression, release and surrender.
Two art forms, merging...this is a huge part of what dance is to me.. ( this is my personal opinion based on my own experiences)
Your soul "becomes" (again, merges and transforms) the music, through dance. And vice versa. "True" Dancers understand, experience this.
I used to dance Ballet, (en Pointe), which is an Art form of story telling, as is music. Pure expression. Through music and movement. Van's music is especially amazing for dance!

I used to dance around to Van Morrison when I was pregnant because I grew up listening to him and then my son unbeknownst to any of us one day he's over at the house and I used to always play the big I don't know if people remember the big huge clunky stereos that had a TV in them and everything and I would dance around with my son and my tummy to Van Morrison and Brown eyed girl was one of the ones that really made him kick well years later he had a girlfriend or how can I put this years later he was at the house his phone rang it was his girlfriend and her ringtone is Brown eyed girl and yes she has brown eyes and my heart just left in my chest you don't know if you should say anything to your kids because at that age he was in his twenties he's now in his mid to late 30s and I should tell him it but you hate to ruin it by telling him that and him thinking ....eeewwww....✌️😃

@Peter Kennedy He sure is a hard one to figure out. At first I thought he was just really pissed off at the music business and he didn't own his own songs. But it seems he's always been this way and everyone whose met him says the same thing. I wonder how such a perhaps tortured man write such heart-wrenching poetry? His work is about spirituality, about inner strength like Listen to the Lion. These are strong emotions not a lot of songwriters talk about. It's amazing to me. And he writes all the music too? And his band is always great. The horn section can't be beat. I wanted to go see him in concert before COVID but he was in Vegas and I am in PA and the tickets were really expensive...several hundred as the lowest price. But for once I'd like to see an interview with Van that really shows some of who he is. He must be fascinating.

@A lesser Gracie I believe (not sure) he grew up mainline Protestant (Church of Ireland?) but is now more of a non-denominational Christian. What's certain is that it's hard to extract any straight answers from him, as you probably gathered from listening to his rather tortuous interviews. He is an unquestionably brilliant poet and musician, but a tough human being to figure out. I believe he was a student at the Bob Dylan School of Evasive Interviews! So be it. I always feel sorry for the earnest journalists who have to be on the receiving end of his hostile aloofness. Maybe he'll write a memoir and set the record straight for us all! Slainte.

@Hans van der Linden Truly one of Van's greatest songs along with several others from this album - but the pictures.... Dorothea Lange's are classics and Russell Lee one might guess was her Number One pupil (probably not, but the influence is clear) - but the subjects of some of the pictures "feel" more like Eastern European, like they don't have the Dustbowl in the cracks and crevices of their skin - there's another quality. Any information? But all the pictures are so powerful. Thank You again for presenting them.

@Miss Tery Agreed, but don't forget he was 22/23 when he wrote his album Astral Weeks.I also think he was around 20/21 when he wrote the song T.B.Sheets, which was put in his first album from Bang records "Blowing Your Mind". The song was not well received then. I love it. I always thought is was an awesome blues song for someone so young to have written and performed. Go Well!

btw I was 21 when I went to his Dublin gig...all my friends were into heavy metal ..but I just loved Van's music...guess that set out my life..totally different to "the crowd" but always proud of me being me no matter what.......

Sitting out in the bleachers at Wrigley Field a couple years ago, I noticed the guy next to me had a very strong Irish accent. So I start talking to him about Ireland... & he shows me a pic of Van the Man singing at his wedding reception. I say you now have my undivided attention 🎶

Yes, the song is beautiful as so many have said. But what does it for me are the pictures you put up. I see God in every face. Just people living their lives. People surviving, getting through life the best they can. You can see it in their faces, in their eyes, in their smiles. I see perseverance, I see love. I see all of us growing old and learning. In 73 did some amazing Turkish Hash in Berlin. Sat on the floor in a small apartment with 2 friends. We were completely blown away by this & other Van Morrison songs that day.

How Van's lyrics and voice go...is one thing....but how his band mixes sound with different rifts, percussions, horns, keys....no one I have heard does this sort of thing. It is like music from a different universe compared to the kid's music of today. I just never have come across another band and writer like Van. One other person on one of his songs wrote that you have to hear Van with your soul...and i think she hit the nail on the head with that comment. I stand in awe of his band, his voice, his lyrics, and the sounds that vibrate within me...never ceases to stir strong emotions within me.

I got the chance to see him live in 1975, sitting in the front row, close enough to his horn section to have a short conversation with them. At one point, the band was on fire & jamming on an instrumental part, and Van jumped off the stage and stood right next to me, watching his band with a critical eye. I got the impression that he's a perfectionist and micromanages every little detail.

I get you aurora but the thing is about artists is that it's not about them or from them. They don't really "do" it. They allow it to channel through them and this gives them life and is such a joy they don't want to stop ever.

I have a friend who was suppose to interview Van Morrison and he was so excited because he had always been one of his favorites and yet when the interview happened Mr Morrison could hardly talk. He gets to that place where all these wonderful songs comes from and he makes magic and yet when he is in his body so to speak he is very very uncomfortable. He is a true enigma. I'm not in any way judging him, I love his music, he just seems like a tortured soul.

@Hans van der Linden The photographer for most of the pictures is Dorothea Lange, famous for her daring and usual photo shoots. The one of my uncle and his parents was taken in Bonners Ferry, Idaho near the Canadian border.

I think this is correct. Van is of Ulster-Scottish descent. The name Morrison is originally from Northern Scotland and has a lot of Scandinavian heritage.

This song is beautiful. I have followed Van for 35 yrs inc 'live' and for me, Astral Weeks is still the finest contemporary album I've ever heard. But having read Johnny Rogan's biography of Van ' No Surrender' recently, I am asking questions of him I didn't ask before.
