What's Wrong With This Picture?
Van Morrison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What's wrong with this picture?
There's something I'm not seeing here
What's wrong with this picture?
Something that's not exactly clear
What's wrong with this picture?
Does it look like it's just another sting?
'Cause it don't mean a thing
If it ain't got that swing and ring a ding ding

What's wrong with this picture?
Doesn't anybody see
That's who everyone thought
That I used to be
What's wrong with this picture?
It's only hanging on a wall
So you can go right back to sleep
And just forget about it all, because

I'm not that person anymore
I'm living in the present time
Baby, don't you understand
I've left all that jive behind

You can't believe what you read in the papers
Or half the news that's on TV
Or the gossip of the neighbours
Or anyone who doesn't want you to be free

I'm not that person anymore
I'm always living in the present time
Don't you understand
I left all that jive behind

What's wrong with this picture?
It's only hanging on the wall

Why don't we take it down and
Just forget about it 'cause that ain't me at all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Van Morrison's song "What's Wrong With This Picture?" seem to be a statement against being judged solely based on one's past. The repetition of the question "What's wrong with this picture?" seems to suggest that there is something off about the way others are perceiving the singer. They are frustrated that people are still seeing them as the person they used to be, rather than the person they have become. The line "Does it look like it's just another sting?" suggests that the singer feels like they are being falsely accused or judged for something they did in the past.

The chorus of the song focuses on the importance of "swing" and "ring a ding ding," which are likely meant to be metaphors for joy and energy. The singer seems to be saying that if something doesn't have those qualities, then it doesn't really matter - in this case, perhaps referring to the judgment they are receiving from others. In the final stanza, the singer explicitly states that they are not the person they used to be, and they have left "all that jive behind." They are urging others to see them for who they are now, rather than who they used to be.

This album is lost in space and time. Out of print, hard to find, rarely mentioned...thoroughly beautiful. So many great songs. And, those trademark Van horns are in full effect throughout. "Somerset", "Meaning of Loneliness", "Get On With the Show"... This may honestly be my favorite Van Morrison album, even above Astral Weeks, Moondance, and all the greats. Thanks for uploading!

outstanding. haven't heard this until now. i suppose i've been asleep the past 9 years. amazing. his artistry shines with a glow that is much deeper than ever. that's saying something because no one could hold a candle to Astral Weeks. and so the circle is complete. fortune smiled today.

Gorgeous Van Morrison!

@Turtle152

I think Van's singing about the scathing biography of him that had come out 2 years earlier.
